Job Title: Professor of Linguistics -- Computational Linguistics
Job Rank: Rank Open

Description:

The Department of Linguistics at Brigham Young University is excited
to announce a position for a professor in the field of linguistics at
any rank—those at any career stage are invited to apply. This
position, with a 'continuing faculty status' akin to tenure track,
entails teaching courses aimed at linguistics majors, minors, and MA
students, especially those interested in computational linguistics.
Our department’s Linguistic Computing minor offers students
foundational knowledge and tools to apply computational models to
natural language. Thus, all candidates should be capable of teaching
key courses in computational linguistics or natural language
processing in addition to other areas of linguistics. The Department
of Linguistics provides a supportive, collaborative atmosphere that
contributes to the development of faculty research agendas in a range
of areas.

Duties/Responsibilities:
Under a 10-month contract, primary responsibilities will encompass:
 - Teaching six courses annually, predominantly within the Linguistics
major and Linguistic Computing minor but also possibly in other
department programs
 - Conducting original research and disseminating that research in
reputable journals, books, or other scholarly outlets
 - Mentoring students in linguistic research, research presentations,
peer-reviewed article publication, and grant writing.
 - Contributing to other departmental or college duties, including
student advising, thesis chairing, program coordination, committee
service, and shared governance.

All candidates must have:
 - Ph.D. by August 2024 in Linguistics or a field related to
computational linguistics or natural language processing.
 - Proficiency to teach core linguistics courses including courses in
the Linguistics Computing minor
 - Evident potential for or substantiated record of scholarly research
and/or a well-defined research agenda
 - Commitment to mentoring students effectively in and out of class.
 - Willingness to support student faith through obvious commitment to
the religious expectations of the sponsoring institution (the Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)

Ideal candidates would have some of the following:
 - Professional experience in computational linguistics.
 - Ability to contribute to linguistics thesis committees (reader
and/or chair roles).
 - Ability to bridge personal scholarship with linguistics.
 - Keenness to collaborate with students on diverse research projects,
both faculty-led and student-driven.

members who enthusiastically embrace and energetically advance its
unique mission.

Starting rank and salary commensurate with qualifications and
experience. As an equal opportunity employer, Brigham Young University
requires adherence to the university’s honor code, dress, and grooming
standards. Preference is given to active members of The Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Position may be under-filled with a one-year appointment depending on
candidate qualifications and background and department needs.

Must apply online. Current CV, three letters of recommendation, two
writing samples and a mission alignment statement (see application for
details) are required.
