Linguistic Field(s): Applied Linguistics; Discipline of Linguistics

Meeting Description:

Interlinguistics, as a branch of linguistics, deals with problems of
international and interlingual communication and especially their
optimization through the use of planned languages such as Esperanto.
It also encompasses other types of constructed languages (also
referred to as conlangs). These range from zonal auxiliary languages
such as Interslavic, to experimental languages like toki pona or the
logic-based lojban, as well as languages created for works of fantasy
or science fiction from the languages of Tolkien to modern languages
like Klingon or High Valyrian, both represented on the language
learning app Duolingo. For overviews of the field of interlinguistics
see Blanke 1985, 2004, Barandovska-Frank 2018, 2020, Gobbo 2020,
Sakaguchi 1998.
Planned and constructed languages raise many intriguing questions.
Experimental languages especially seem to be apt instruments for
probing the limits of language creation, although it is not yet clear
just how far they can push language structural boundaries. Still, they
remain interesting tools for testing the validity of language
universals and various implicational relations (Dols 2012).
While any topic related to planned languages is welcome, the workshop
especially seeks topics related to structural, pragmatic,
sociolinguistic and psycholinguistic aspects of Esperanto, the most
successful and widespread planned language (see Fiedler 2015, Jansen
2013, Koutny 2022, 2023). Esperanto speakers are geographically
dispersed speaking different languages in their daily lives and use
Esperanto as a lingua franca with each other (Fiedler & Brosch 2022,
Gobbo & Marácz 2021). Nonetheless, they maintain a high level of
cohesion and follow an internally accepted set of linguistic and
behavioral norms that is cross-cultural in nature. This makes them a
unique kind of language community that is under-studied in mainstream
linguistics.
Topics related to linguistic aspects, especially difficulties, of
intercultural communication are also suitable. The workshop also
welcomes discussion on the potential relevance of planned languages
for language policy, especially as related to the evaluation of
fairness in international communication as well as linguistic justice
(Fiedler & Brosch 2022, Gazzola et al. 2023, Gobbo & Marácz 2021,
Tonkin 2017).
