Meeting Description:

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is characterized by
rich linguistic diversity, with several languages spoken in and across
countries. The region has been a meeting point for various
civilizations, resulting in the convergence, divergence, and
coexistence of numerous language varieties. Arabic is the most widely
spoken language. However, there are also significant populations of
speakers of other indigenous languages such as Amazigh, Kurdish and
Turkish. Other foreign languages to the region are used such as
English and French to serve various sociolinguistic functions.

Studying the dynamics of language contact in the MENA region is a
multifaceted topic that involves many linguistic and extra-linguistic
factors. It is shaped by historical, cultural, social, and linguistic
considerations. The linguistic diversity, cultural heritage, colonial
legacy, globalization, and modernization in the region all contribute
to intricate interactions among the languages. Understanding these
dynamics is crucial for linguists, policymakers, educators, and
researchers interested in language contact in the MENA region.

This call for papers is an opportunity to explore the linguistic
landscape of the region and highlight the social, historical, and
cultural determinants modulating language contact dynamics. We
recommend interdisciplinary approaches that draw on linguistics,
anthropology, education, and related fields.
