Description:

Faculty of Arts and Humanities
Assistant Professorship in Phonetics (W1) with tenure track (W2)
(f/m/d)

The University of Cologne is one of the oldest and largest
universities in Germany. With its six Faculties covering a broad
spectrum of disciplines and its internationally outstanding research
profile areas, it enjoys an excellent reputation for its academic
achievements and high standards of undergraduate and graduate
education. The Phonetics laboratory has an excellent track record in
experimental studies featuring multidimensional analysis of acoustic
and multimodal speech data, with a focus on prosody, intonation,
acoustics and kinematics and their phonological interpretation and
modelling.

YOUR TASKS
The successful candidate will further develop Cologne Phonetics by
applying state of the art methods and establishing innovative research
directions. The applicant will have a clear concept for modern,
engaging teaching that covers all areas of phonetics and embraces the
potential of digital learning and teaching tools. Research is expected
to be centered around experimental phonetics and laboratory phonology,
with a particular focus on prosodic analysis and the modelling of
conversational interaction. Previous experience with a range of
empirical methods in the study of speech production and perception is
essential. Further expertise in the study of multimodality and/ or the
phonetics of non-European languages is desirable.

YOUR PROFILE
Experience in acquiring third-party funding is expected, as is the
willingness to engage with existing interdisciplinary and
inter-faculty research initiatives, such as the current profile area
Skills and Structures in Language and Cognition or the Collaborative
Research Center Prominence in Language, while new and innovative
cooperative projects should also be developed. Close collaboration
with colleagues from the various fields of linguistics and a
dedication to networking between the different linguistics
laboratories at the University of Cologne are considered essential.
The applicant should have a proven track record of high-quality
research as evidenced through publications in internationally
recognized scientific publication outlets with quality assurance. The
involvement in software development and/ or innovative data collection
and processing initiatives (including research data management) will
further be considered in the evaluation of applicants.
