Linguistic Field(s): Semantics
Subject Language(s): English (eng)

Abstract: Languages can express negative indefiniteness with dedicated
pronouns such as English nobody or French personne or multifunctional
ones such as English anybody, as in I didn‘t see anybody. The negation
can be expressed solely on the indefinite pronoun, on the clausal
level or on both the indefinite pronoun and the clausal level, a
constellation often called ‘negative concord’. I aim at an
understanding of the frequency of the various strategies, of the
nature and diachrony of ’negative concord’ and of the different
approaches in current linguistics.

Professor Johan van der Auwera is Emeritus Professor at University of
Antwerp, Belgium, and he has been developing very relevant research in
Typology, ‘Areal linguistics’, English, Germanic and General
Linguistics and in Theoretical Linguistics: Semantics, Syntax,
Pragmatics, Morphology.
