Special Collection on the Language of Fake News in Linguistics
Vanguard

Editors: Silje Susanne Alvestad, Nele Põldvere and Elizaveta Kibisova
(University of Oslo)

Against the backdrop of the 2016 and 2020 US presidential elections,
the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the topic
of fake news is highly relevant. Despite this, it has not received a
lot of attention in linguistics. However, early research has shown
that linguists can make an important contribution through detailed
analyses of the defining linguistic features of fake news and the
development of fake news corpora based on data of high quality. With
this special collection in Linguistics Vanguard, we intend to capture
recent developments in research into the language of fake news from a
diverse range of perspectives and approaches.

Potential topics for the special collection include, but are not
limited to:
• Specific and meaningful definitions and operationalizations of
fake news and related concepts such as misinformation, disinformation,
propaganda, conspiracy theories, hoaxes and satire;
• Language-centered empirical research into fake news from a
broad perspective, including Register Studies, Pragmatics, Stylistics,
(Critical) Discourse Analysis, Sociolinguistics, among others;
• Issues related to the design, collection, annotation,
archiving, distribution and analysis of fake news datasets;
• Interdisciplinary approaches to the language of fake news
where linguistics is in the driver’s seat;
• Applications and impact of linguistic analyses of fake news,
e.g., in fact-checking and education.

We welcome submissions based on a variety of contexts and situations
(mainstream news, social media, narratives), modalities (spoken,
written, multimodal), methodological approaches (corpus,
computational, experimental) and languages. Our definition of fake
news is very broad, covering the range of terms mentioned above (e.g.,
mis- and disinformation).

Format and submission
Contributors are asked to submit a tentative title and an abstract of
max. 500 words (excluding references and figures). The abstract should
give a clear indication of the topic and aims of the study, its
relevance to linguistics, the data and methods used (if appropriate),
and preliminary or expected results (i.e., completed research is not
required at this point). The work should not have been previously
published in any language. The abstract should also include the
name(s) of the author(s) and full contact details. The submission
should be made to the guest editors: Silje Susanne Alvestad
(s.s.alvestad at ilos.uio.no), Nele Põldvere (nele.poldvere at ilos.uio.no)
and Elizaveta Kibisova (elizaveta.kibisova at ilos.uio.no), University of
Oslo.

Contributors of selected abstracts will be invited to submit a full
paper (3,000–4,000 words excluding references and ancillary material)
that will undergo peer review. The full papers should follow general
submission guidelines for the journal:

Why Linguistics Vanguard?
Linguistics Vanguard publishes shorter papers (~4,000-word limit), a
feature of the journal that makes it easier for people to read the
papers. The multimodal platform is designed to integrate interactive
content, including audio and video, images, maps, software code, raw
data, or any other media that enhances the traditional written word.
The concise paper format as well as the fact that the journal is
published solely online will allow for quick turnaround during
reviewing and submission. With no publication costs and with access to
the entire special collection, Linguistics Vanguard is an excellent
venue for research on fake news, an important societal issue.
