HKU is Hong Kong’s oldest tertiary institution, with a history dating

All successful full-time MPhil and PhD applicants will be fully funded
by the School/HKU. The School of English in the University of Hong
Kong invites applications for MPhil and PhD research scholarships in

English Literary Studies:
 - British and American Literature from Medieval through to
Contemporary periods
 - Writing Hong Kong

 - Digital Humanities

 - Neo-Victorian Studies

 - Race Studies

English Linguistics:

 - Discourse analysis – digital/online contexts; food discourse;
family interaction; health communication; narratives
 - Experimental phonetics – second language speech learning; practices
in forensic speech science; evidential strength of speech features
 - Historical sociolinguistics
 - Human-animal communication
 - Interactional sociolinguistics – gatekeeping encounters;
cross-cultural communication; framing; intertextuality
 - Intersex and language – especially corpus-assisted discourse
analysis, including but not limited to the use of the Intersex
Research Corpus (HKU); the study of online circulation of knowledge;
biomedical regulation of bodies
 - Language and disability
 - Language socialization and/or language shift
 - Psycholinguistics – bi/multilingual language processing; implicit,
incidental and explicit learning; use of behavioural and eye-tracking
methods
 - Queer linguistics – critical sociolinguistic approaches to gender
and sexuality
 - World Englishes
