Description:

Applications are invited for a PhD position in phonetics/phonology and
neuro-linguistics at Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris. The position
is part of a collaborative project funded by the CNRS and the
University of Chicago, awarded to Sharon Peperkamp (Paris) and Alan Yu
(Chicago).

The project focuses on individual differences in neural encoding of
the speech signal at both the subcortical and cortical levels in
non-native speech perception. Specifically, it aims at examining to
what extent the neural encoding of acoustic-phonetic input (as
measured with EEG) predicts success in perceptual learning of new
phonological contrasts.

The PhD student will be based at Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris,
but will visit the University of Chicago at the start of the project
for a one-month training session in the EEG research protocol
developed by Alan Yu.

Salary: € 25,620 per year, for three years.
Starting date: between October 1st 2024 and January 1st 2025.

Requirements:
 - A master’s degree in a relevant field (cognitive science,
linguistics, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, engineering)
 - A specialization in speech perception, phonetics/phonology, or
natural language processing
 - Programming skills (e.g., Python, Matlab, JavaScript)
 - Knowledge of statistical analyses (R)

Desired assets:
 - Experience with EEG
 - Experience with online testing
 - Proficiency in French

Note that the deadline on the application website (April 26 2024) will
be extended until the position is filled.
