Subject: Obituary - Dr. Arne Nagels (1980-2024)

The University of Mainz, its Faculty of Philosophy and Philology and
its community of linguists would like to inform with great sadness
that Prof. Dr Arne Nagels has passed away at the age of 43, shortly
before his 44th birthday.

Arne Nagels was born on the 18th of April 1980 in Kleve, Germany. He
was Professor of General Linguistics at the University of Mainz since
2017 and served as Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Philology
from March 2020 to April 2023.

After completing his Master's degree in English and Romance
Linguistics and Psychology at RWTH Aachen University from 2001 to
2008, he moved to Philipps University Marburg for his PhD, which he
completed three years later in 2011 with a dissertation on
neuropsychology and linguistics. His research led him i.a. to a guest
stay at the University of California at Irvine, and to a lecture tour
of the US in 2011.

Since 2017 he was Professor of General Linguistics at the University
of Mainz, where he led the neurolinguistic laboratory, combining his
expertise in linguistics and neuropsychology, where he pushed his
field forward in both research and teaching. Of particular note is his
leadership of the Gutenberg Research Training Group “Simply complex –
easy-to-read language” (2018–2021), a pioneering research project for
the systematic experimental testing of the rules developed for
easy-to-read languages. His genuine concern and interest in his staff
and students and his generous support was another characteristic that
made him an excellent supervisor and teacher.

Arne Nagels passed away suddenly and far too early on the 9th of April
this year, leaving behind an enormous gap. Colleagues and students
will remember him as a warm personality who combined deep humanity
with academic excellence. We will particularly miss his cheerful and
encouraging laughs, as well as his kindness to everyone who had the
privilege of having worked with him.

-Walter Bisang with all colleagues and staff of General Linguistics
and Language Typology at the University of Mainz
