Subject: Phonetics, Sociolinguistics: Postdoc in (Socio)Phonetics, University of Michigan - Ann Arbor

University or Organization: University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
Department: Linguistics
Job Location: Michigan, USA
Web Address: https://lsa.umich.edu/linguistics
Job Title: Postdoc in (Socio)Phonetics
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Phonetics; Sociolinguistics

Description:

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in
phonetics/sociophonetics at the Department of Linguistics, University
of Michigan. The successful candidate will work under the supervision
of Professor Andries Coetzee. We seek a phonetician who is comfortable
working with data from sociolinguistic interviews as well as with
laboratory-based data. Preference will be given to applicants who have
a background in statistical and quantitative modeling, speech
processing experiments (lexical decision, phoneme identification,
priming, eye-tracking, etc.), speech production experiments
(acoustics, ultrasound, airflow, etc.), and sociolinguistic interview
protocols. Applicants should ideally also have strong familiarity with
and competence in conventional statistical modeling in R and/or
Python. Since the position will require working with large amounts of
data from several different research projects, organizational and data
management skills are also expected.

Many of the projects related to this position will focus on Afrikaans,
and familiarity with Afrikaans and/or Dutch will therefore be an added
benefit (but is not a requirement). The position may require travel
for data collection in South Africa, and candidates who are able to
travel internationally are therefore preferred. Familiarity with
research on bilingualism, multilingualism and language contact will be
an additional benefit.

The researcher may also oversee graduate and undergraduate students
working on projects related to the research in the Michigan Phonetics
Laboratory. The successful applicant will be encouraged to work on
their own research projects and to interact with the university's
wider research environment. This includes a large phonetics and
sociolinguistics community, and students and faculty in Linguistics,
Psychology, Anthropology, and the Weinberg Institute for Cognitive
Science.

As part of their professional development, the successful candidate
will also teach one or two courses per academic year at the
undergraduate or graduate level (comprising up to 33% of the total
appointment). Courses will be selected in consultation with the
department chair, and may include an upper-level course or graduate
course related to the candidates research.
