Description:

PhD scholar, Embodied cognition in language and social interaction

We seek applicants for a research-based PhD position on the topic of
Embodied cognition in language and social interaction. The position
will be based at the Centre for Human Interactivity, a research unit
within the Department of Culture and Language at the University of
Southern Denmark. The candidate will be based at SDU’s Odense campus.
The position will be supervised by Dr Edward Baggs and by Professor
Sune Vork Steffensen.

The position
The Centre for Human Interactivity specializes in research on
language, cognition, and social interaction in real world settings.
Researchers work within the framework of embodied cognition and make
use of diverse methods, including ethnographic, theoretical, and
experimental approaches. Candidates are expected to outline a research
project (maximum 5 pages, 2400 characters per page). The outline
should specify the methodological approach(es) you are interested in
using, and make clear your motivations for applying to work at the
Centre for Human Interactivity. You may use these guidelines in
structuring your proposal. Examples of relevant topics include, but
are not limited to, the following:
 - Understanding the interface between perception and social
interaction, including developmental aspects
 - Extending embodied cognition theory to explain human culture,
including language and symbolic problem solving
 - Cognitive aspects of collective action problems, including climate
change
 - Technologically-mediated social interaction, including
human–computer interaction and communication in virtual reality
 - Cognitive and interactional processes in organizational settings,
including problem solving, decision making, and interaction design

Eligibility: The scholarship is open to promising candidates from any
country. The candidate should ideally have a first degree in a
relevant discipline (e.g. psychology, anthropology, philosophy,
linguistics) and should be able to explain their interest in studying
social interaction within the framework of embodied cognition. The
candidate should expect to be in possession of a completed masters
degree before starting. If you are currently enrolled in a masters
program you should include a letter of recommendation from your
supervisor or school confirming your expected completion and
graduation dates.

Award: The position is fully funded for a fixed term of three years.
The scholar’s tuition fees are covered and the candidate will receive
a salary consistent with conditions set out in the existing
national-level collective agreement for PhD workers. For a full-time
PhD student, this amounts to a monthly salary of approximately 31,000
DKK (4,550 USD). For more information on being a PhD student at SDU
Humanities, and for guidance on completing the application, see the
