Meeting Description:

Globalisation is a process which involves social, political, economic
and cultural aspects and leads towards an increasing interconnection
between domains and nations of the modern world. Globalisation is not
a recent phenomenon, but rather an enduring process which has seen a
strong rise in the last 100 years. The rapid development and gathering
speed of the globalisation process since the beginning of the 21st
century owes a lot to the informatisation process, the development of
the Internet and digitalization in general.
This spiralling change caused by social and technological development,
especially that of Artificial Intelligence, is constantly shaping the
future of humanity, including language and the various activities
related to the linguistic domain. The latter particularly comes to the
fore in the development of devices, software and technologies which
enable new forms of experimental research, large corpora studies,
large data management, and the like. The new circumstances result in
an impressive growth in the visibility of scholarly work, research
results and implementation of scientific research projects, with
issues of ethics in scholarly work and research reaching a new level.
The domain of language learning sees massive changes, be it in formal,
non-formal or informal learning, or translation, where linguistics and
modern technologies interrelate in an especially intricate manner.
Previous CALS conferences had touched upon specific aspects of these
issues, but the list of open and unresolved questions is extensive,
with new challenges emerging constantly in the context of
globalisation. The latest developments in Artificial Intelligence add
to the latter, with the pressing issue of the myriad affordances and
limitations underlying its implementation.
This year’s CALS conference aims to present the results of research in
the domain of language and linguistics in the age of globalisation,
informatisation, digitalisation and AI development and shed more light
on the relationship between language, linguistic research, and the
contemporary extralinguistic reality.
