Meeting Description:

The Studies in the History of the English Language (SHEL) conference
provides a forum for research about the History of the English
Language in all its dimensions and methodologies and theoretical
perspectives.

Call for Papers:

Conference Theme: The History of English as a (G)local Language

SHEL finds its way to New Jersey for its thirteenth iteration. Taking
advantage of New Jersey’s status as one of the most linguistically
diverse states in the US, conference organizers have structured the
conference around the notion that the history of English unfolds both
at the local and the global levels simultaneously. Nevertheless,
presentations on any topic related to the History of the English
Language are welcome and encouraged.

We invite abstracts and proposals for all linguistic approaches and
methodological perspectives on the History of the English Language,
and welcome presentations on all varieties of English and
chronological periods of the language. Several anticipated
themes/threads/workshops included in the conference program will be:

English as a (G)local Language: Papers can address topics that address
English as a world or local language historical perspectives.
Issues in Pedagogy with the History of the English Language:
Papers/Workshop Proposals may address issues regarding the history of
the English language for audiences in Higher Education as well as
teacher preparation for the K-12 level.
Interdisciplinary perspectives to the History of the English Language:
Papers may address topics dealing with the intersection between HEL
and other disciplines, including, but not limited to Rhetoric and
Composition; Literature; World Languages.

Proposals need not specifically address these themes to be accepted.
Conference organizers also welcome pre-organized panels or workshops.

Papers and workshop contributions should be twenty minutes (with ten
minutes for discussion).

Please submit abstracts (250-500 words with references) with author
name, institutional affiliation/independent status, abstract title,
and A/V requirements to shel13 at tcnj.edu by May 1. Participants will be
notified of decisions by June 1, 2024. Questions about the conference
program should be directed to Felicia Steele (steele at tcnj.edu) and
questions about travel to Madison, NJ, or conference facilities should
be directed to Matthieu Boyd (mwboyd at fdu.edu).

The Conference website will go live by April 1, 2024,
