Narratives of Non-English L2 Language Teachers

Nur Yiğitoğlu Aptoula & Melinda Reichelt

Much of what we know about L2 teaching is based on conclusions drawn
from research on teaching in English as an L2, with languages besides
English being given short shrift or ignored entirely (Yiğitoğlu &
Reichelt, 2019). However, it is necessary to look at L2 teaching
practices in non-English languages in order to gain a more
comprehensive understanding of language teaching–because different
target languages play different roles in the contexts in which they
are taught. This can, in turn, influence teaching and learning in
significant ways (Reichelt, 2009; 2011; Yiğitoğlu & Reichelt, 2019).
In order to push language theory forward and advance our understanding
of L2 teaching practice, this volume will include narratives of
teachers of non-English languages in a variety of contexts. While we
are open to including narratives from all contexts and non-English
L2s, we are particularly interested in including voices from
geographical contexts outside the U.S. and from institutional contexts
that are underrepresented in the literature, including contexts such
as community language programs, primary schools, and secondary
schools.. Besides that, we are interested in including narratives from
teachers of marginalized and/or endangered or threatened languages.
We seek abstracts of 500 words for inclusion in an edited volume of
chapters, to be published by Routledge, that will focus on narratives
about teaching non-English L2s. Your abstract should outline your plan
for a chapter in which you tell your story of teaching a non-English
L2. Please see the Guidelines for Accepted Proposals, below, when
crafting your abstract.
