The project group “Complexity, causality, change” (CoCa, https://sites
.google.com/site/katlehret/research/current-projects-coca) at the
Linguistics Section of the Department of English, University of
Freiburg, is searching for a highly motivated

PhD student to work on agent-based models to investigate causal
mechanisms of language complexity.

As part of the project group, you are going to carry out research at
the interface of corpus-based, quantitative linguistics and AI to
explore and test the relationship of extra-linguistic triggers (such
as population size and number of non-native speakers) and
morphosyntactic complexity in Englishes. Furthermore, you will develop
agent-based models of language contact using the Babel Toolkit
(https://emergent-languages.org/) and Functional Construction Grammar
Editor (https://www.fcg-net.org/download/) to test these triggers as
causal mechanisms for complexity in language. The research conducted
will contribute towards your PhD dissertation in Linguistics or
English linguistics.

A collaboration with Sony Computer Science Laboratories – Paris
(https://csl.sony.fr/) on developing these models is planned.

This position is available from April 2024 (but the start date is
negotiable), the contract is for three years, and remunerated
according to the German salary scale 13 TV-L, 65% position.

What is required?

 - Master’s degree in either Computational/General/English
Linguistics, Digital Humanities, Computer Science or Artificial
Intelligence
 - Strong interest in both linguistic structure and programming
 - Experience and knowledge of a symbolic programming language (e.g.
python, Lisp)
 - Solid statistical foundations (ideally with R)
 - Some general NLP skills
 - Previous experience working with Fluid Construction Grammar is
advantageous but not a prerequisite
 - Excitement, self-motivation, and commitment
 - (Very) good English skills
