Dates: 23-Jun-2024 - 20-Jul-2024
Location: Bilbao (and Madrid), Basque Country
Focus: Designed for students who want to gain first-hand experience
doing linguistics, beyond reading about it in a textbook. In one
class, you will learn how linguists document languages, with a focus
on morphology; this could count toward Morphology or Field Methods
requirements for your institution. In the other class, you will learn
about the development of Spanish and the other Romance languages from
Latin, the languages of Spain with emphasis on language diversity and
endangerment during the UN's Decade of Indigenous Languages; this
could count toward Sociolinguistics, Historical Linguistics or
elective credit for your institution.
Minimum Education Level: No Minimum
Special Qualifications:
Minimum pre-requisite for enrollment is successful completion of an
Introduction to Linguistics class. Language of instruction is English;
no other language requirements: students are not expected to have any
familiarity with Basque, and while knowledge of Spanish could be
helpful for visiting Spain that is not a requirement of the program.
Description:
Designed for undergraduate Linguistics majors, this program will give
students a hands-on experience with two Linguistics classes. The first
is Morphology, which will be taught with a field methods style,
working with a speaker of Basque in Bilbao, Spain. The second is
Dialectology, including historical and sociolinguistic perspectives on
Spanish and other languages of Spain. Please contact the instructor if
you are interested in the program and have any logistical or other
questions.
For academic or other questions about the program, please contact the
instructor, Dr. Daniel Ross. I would be happy to discuss the program
with you. You can also contact the UCR Education Abroad office for
other questions such as for financial aid or transfer of class credit
(see website).
