Meeting Description:

For several decades, the study of Linguistic Landscapes (LL) has
contributed to enriching the understanding and the sociolinguistic and
semiotic analysis of urban, rural, and educational spaces, both public
and private. The presence - or absence - of certain languages in the
LL, as well as their different use or function, allows for a snapshot
of the multilingual and multicultural reality that characterises
cities and neighbourhoods. It offers an overview of top-down and
bottom-up language policies, linguistic vitality, and the role that
languages can play in processes of accelerated contact, driven also by
ideologies / attitudes / trends / movements of city transformation.
Through an LL-based approach, it is possible to study the outcomes of
linguistic and cultural contact, as well as to obtain indications
about the status of languages within society, a territory, and the
language market, power relations, cultural ideals, and, in general,
the symbolic construction of space. The (linguistic) traces in the LL,
in this sense, offer a unique perspective on protest movements,
prevailing discourses, and identity (co)constructions.

In Italy, the study of Linguistic Landscapes has led to a greater and
better understanding of urban multi- and plurilingualism. Besides, it
contributed to shed light on the linguistic (super)diversity that
characterises the peninsula, and on the ways and forms in which the
different poles of the Italian linguistic space interact and manifest
globally. The visibility (or lack thereof) of minority languages,
ancient and new settlement languages, dialects, and international
languages, as well as Italian in the world have indeed been at the
centre of research and experiments that have increasingly involved
more scholars.

The Conference aims to be an occasion for meeting, comparing, and
exchanging for all those who, from various perspectives, deal with LL,
particularly in Italy, and/or in relation to Italian in the world. The
study of LL is, in fact, inherently interdisciplinary involves
linguistic and non-linguistic disciplines, precisely because of the
relationship with different perceptions and management of territories.
The conference intends to consider this interdisciplinarity as well as
theoretical and methodological issues applied to research.

The Conference, therefore, aims to promote reflection on how
Linguistic Landscape studies have found space in research,
particularly in relation to:

a) development of linguistic studies and data collection through LL
(methodological, technological innovations, spaces and fields of
investigation, participants, etc.)

b) development of research in the linguistic education and pedagogical
field

c) development of linguistic teaching aimed at enhancing forms of
LL/schoolscape/soundscape with a view to plurilingual and
intercultural education

d) relationship between LL in the national context and the use of
Italian abroad

e) relationship between LL and the role of minority groups of new and
ancient settlement

f) multi- and interdisciplinary visions of LL: geography, art, sports,
history, economics, urban planning, etc.
