Description:

The Languages Unit in the Faculty of Information Technology and
Communication Sciences at Tampere University is looking for a
University Lecturer in English Linguistics. The position is full-time
and will be filled on a permanent basis.

The English specialisation is part of the Languages Unit in the
Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences. The
Languages Unit is a multilingual and multidisciplinary unit hosting
research groups, researchers, and teachers specialising in
linguistics, translation studies, and literary and cultural
scholarship. The research conducted in the Unit and its research
centre, Plural, focuses on the role of language and culture in
societal change. The current research projects investigate language
use in multilingual and mobile societies; multimodal and discursive
practices and accessibility in the digital era; and the spatial,
environmental, and geopolitical concerns of contemporary as well as
past societies. The linguistics section of the English specialisation
has a strong research and teaching profile on language variation and
change, corpus linguistics, discourse analysis, syntax, and World
Englishes.

The Degree Programme in Languages provides students with in-depth
expertise in the areas of language, literature, and translation.
Students can major in English, Finnish, German, Russian and Swedish.
The English specialisation is the largest section in the Degree
Programme, and we currently offer four specialisations at the MA and
PhD level: linguistics, literature, translation and interpreting as
well as technical communication.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to BA and MA
level teaching and thesis supervision in the English specialisation
and to the joint teaching in the Unit, as well as to postgraduate
research supervision. The successful candidate will conduct research
in English linguistics and contribute to the research profile of the
Unit. The candidate will also develop the English linguistics subject
area and take on some administrative duties (e.g. develop academic
advising, contribute to curriculum development, serve on internal
committees).

REQUIREMENTS
 - A doctoral degree in the field of English linguistics
 - Teaching and supervision skills required to successfully perform
the duties and functions of the position
 - The ability to teach a broad range of topics in English linguistics
 - A strong research profile including high-level publications and
(an) ongoing research project(s) that complement(s) the research
profile of the Unit
 - Studies in university pedagogy or equivalent skills (a minimum of
10 ETCS)
 - Good collaboration and interaction skills
 - Documented interest in continuous curriculum and pedagogical
enhancement.

WE OFFER
The position will be filled on a permanent basis starting on 1 August
2024, or as mutually agreed. The salary will be based on both the job
requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance
with the Finnish University Salary System. The position of the
University Lecturer is placed on the job demands level 6 (teaching and
research staff). A typical starting salary is around 4400-4600
€/month. A trial period of six months applies to all our new
employees.
