Subject: Morphology, Semantics, Syntax: PhD, University of Vienna

Institution/Organization: University of Vienna, Austria
Department: Department of Linguistics
Web Address: https://linguistics.univie.ac.at

Level: PhD

Specialty Areas: Morphology; Semantics; Syntax

Description:

The newly funded Spezialforschungsbereich (SFB) ‘Language Between
Redundancy and Deficiency’ is seeking to hire two PhD candidates for
one of its subprojects for up to four years, starting in May 2024, or
as soon as possible thereafter.

Subproject: The (Non-)Deficiency and (Non-)Redundancy of Clitic
Pronouns
Principal Investigator: Dalina Kallulli
Location: Vienna, Department of Linguistics
2 PhD positions (predoc, 75%)

We seek excellent early-career researchers with a strong background in
theoretical linguistics. The successful candidates will carry out
research on the morphosyntax and semantics of clitic, null, and other
arguably deficient pronoun-like elements, including subject-verb
agreement, in a formal linguistic typological perspective. Applicants
should have a solid background in theoretical linguistics, preferably
with a specialisation in (morpho-)syntax and/or comparative
linguistics. As one of the foci of the project will be object
agreement (alongside subject agreement), we especially encourage
submissions from people who have previously worked on, and/or with
speakers of, one or more such languages (e.g. Bantu, Basque, Georgian,
Hungarian, Semitic, etc.).

The successful candidates will be expected to contribute to the
project work, including publications and conference participation,
assist in organisational matters, and complete a PhD dissertation at
the University of Vienna under the supervision of the PI during the
four years of the program. For more information please contact the PI
at: dalina.kallulli at univie.ac.at

The SFB consists of 8 subprojects and an administrative subproject in
the areas of syntax, morphology and semantics, investigating the
interface of the symbolic system of grammar and the stochastic
cognitive system. The focus of the first four years will be on
pronouns, their structure, feature specification and interpretation.
The SFB involves PIs from Departments of Linguistics, German Studies,
Romance Studies and Slavic Studies at the Universities of Vienna, Graz
and Salzburg. Applicants should have an MA degree (or equivalent) in
linguistics with specialisations as detailed above. The SFB will
provide an active and lively research environment with
inter-university collaborations, as well as ties to the local research
communities, and an intellectually open, inclusive and flexible work
environment at three leading Austrian universities. Applications from
outside Austria are encouraged; knowledge of German is not required.
Payment and benefits are as specified in the Austrian Kollektivvertrag
for public employees (for general information see the personnel costs
for doctoral candidates at: https://www.fwf.ac.at/en/funding/steps-to
-your-fwf-project/further-information/personnel-costs). In addition,
the SFB provides funds for travel, conferences, workshops and
networking activities.

The University of Vienna has an anti-discriminatory employment policy
and attaches great importance to equal opportunities, the advancement
of women, and diversity.

We are looking forward to receiving your application, which must be in
English. Applications should include the following documents:
 - Cover letter
 - Academic CV
 - Academic paper (thesis, other qualifying paper, publication)
 - Copies of degree certificates
 - Contact details of potential referees, or letters of recommendation

Please submit the documents as a PDF-file, or several PDFs merged in
one zip-file.

Applications, including an indication of your earliest starting date,
should be sent to dalina.kallulli at univie.ac.at

Final application deadline: March 31st, 2024.
We anticipate holding online interviews with short-listed candidates
shortly after the deadline.

Application Deadline: 31-Mar-2024
