Job Title: Post-doc in Linguistics, Syntax and Sign Languages
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Syntax; Semantics, Field Work

Required Language(s): French Sign Language (fsl)

Description:

Deadline for candidatures : 25 march 2024
Duration : 12 month
Start of contract : 1 septembre 2024
Full time Post-doctoral position

The lab Structures Formelles du Langage (UMR 7023) invites
application for a 20 months postdoctoral position starting on Nov. 1,
2023. This position is funded by the Agence Nationale de la Recherche
(ANR) on the project entitled “Sign Language’ Syntax and Acquisition
(SiLSA)” led by Charlotte Hauser.

This project aims at filling the gap in describing (French) Sign
Language Syntax and its Acquisition (SiLSA). A first necessary step in
this direction will be descriptive, as a lot is still unknown
regarding French Sign Language (Langue des Signes Française, LSF)’s
syntax, especially when it comes to complex sentences (e.g.
subordinate, complement, and adverbial clauses). The Post-doctoral
researcher will have to carry field work to elicit appropriate LSF
data to determine whether cases of subordination surface in LSF for
adverbial clauses, for which ones, and in what shapes. Their work will
allow us to identify any shared pattern across adverbial clauses to
mark subordination, but also across types of subordinated clauses,
hence helping us complete LSF complex sentences grammar.

This descriptive work will allow to design an experiment aiming at
assessing adverbial clauses comprehension in adults. This is the
missing piece of the existing test battery on LSF comprehension that
was designed and funded in a previous ERC project (SIGN-HUB, H2020).
The complete adult battery will then be adaptated in a children
version.

The postholder will work with the Principal Investigator and two Deaf
informants to:
 - Systematically investigate LSF means to express each of the 11
adverbial functions
 - Produce an inventory of all complex sentences in LSF (using
existing work and their novel work)
 - Design and carry an experiment to test comprehension of adverbial
clauses in adults
 - Communicate their results in conferences and journals
 - Help with the organization of a Work-shop on Sign Language
subordination.

The candidate is thus expected to have:
 - the competence to deal with the syntactic and semantic survey of
complex sentences properties in the generative framework;
 - knowledge of elicitation and introspection methods;
 - skill and interest in careful and detailed empirical investigation;
 - interest in collaborative work with both hearing and Deaf
participants;
 - some mastery of the languages of investigation/communication
(ideally, but not necessarily, a near-native competence in a sign
langage, with intent of learning French Sign Language, and a good
level in at least English).
 - prior experience with experimental design would be a plus

The selected candidate fellow will be hired by the National Center for
Scientific Research (CNRS) and will be hosted at the UMR 7023. This
lab is situated in Paris, at 59 rue Pouchet. The contract is
full-time, spread over the week according to the needs of the field,
the analyses and the co-supervision of the trainees; The person
recruited will have a workstation shared with the members of the
project at the SFL laboratory, but will be required to travel
throughout France as well as to places of dissemination (colloquia, in
France and abroad, and in the associative environment for the
promotion of the project, mission expenses covered).

Applications must be submitted through the CNRS platform linked below.
