Institution/Organization: Goethe University Frankfurt

Level: PhD

Specialty Areas: Philosophy of Language; Semantics

Description:

At the Institute of Linguistics, Department of Modern Philologies, at
Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, the position of a

Research Assistant (m/f/d)
(E13 TV-G-U, 65% part time)

is to be filled starting next possible date non-permanent until 31
December 2027 within the project A01 “Negation and Cancellation” (PIs:
Prof. Cornelia Ebert, Linguistics/Semantics & Prof. André Fuhrmann,
Philosophy/Logic). The project is part of the SFB 1629 “Negation in
Language and Beyond (NegLaB)”. The salary grade is based on the job
characteristics of the collective agreement (TV-G-U) applicable to
Goethe University.

The tasks of the position holder include participation in research and
scientific services in the subproject A01 “Negation and Cancellation”
within the SFB 1629 “NegLaB” with the qualification goal of obtaining
a doctorate. The subproject explores negation as a
linguistic-philosophical and discourse-semantic phenomenon,
particularly its relationship to the semantic-pragmatic operation of
cancellation, i.e., the systematic removal of information from the
discourse background. The focus is on researching the logical
foundations of negation as a truth-value-changing operation on one
hand, and an information-deleting operation on the other, as well as a
comprehensive examination and modeling of semantic-pragmatic negation
and cancellation phenomena. Specifically, the following tasks are
expected: Research on negation and cancellation at the
philosophical-linguistic interface, participation in the development
of logical and formal-semantic models of cancellation, support in the
conception, implementation, and analysis of quantitative and
qualitative studies, as well as the presentation and publication of
project results. The focus will be on empirical formal-semantic work.
The opportunity for academic qualification (Ph.D.) and self-directed
research will be provided.

Requirements: You should have an excellent degree (Master's/Diploma)
in a relevant field with a focus on Linguistics/Semantics or
Philosophy/Logic. Good knowledge of written and spoken English is
mandatory; German language skills are advantageous. You should have a
demonstrable interest in formal semantics and/or logic, as well as
enjoy working independently and taking initiative. Experience with
psycholinguistic methods is desirable.

Applications with the usual documents (cover letter, curriculum vitae,
relevant certificates, in the original and if necessary certified
translations into German or English, as well as the names of two
references) should be sent in English or German in electronic form in
a PDF format by 19 March 2024, to Lennart Fritzsche, email:
fritzsche at em.uni-frankfurt.de.

Application Deadline: 19-Mar-2024
