Description:

Applications are invited for a PhD student in UCD’s School of Irish,
Celtic Studies & Folklore, to be funded by an Ad Astra Studentship
comprising a full tuition-fee waiver and an annual stipend of €22,000
for four years, plus annual research expenses of up to €4,000. Study
will commence in the academic year 2024-25, with the student working
independently under the supervision of the relevant Ad Astra Fellow
(Dr Connor McCabe, https://people.ucd.ie/connor.mccabe).

Proposals for a range of topics relating to the linguistic study of
Irish are welcomed. These may include production and/or perception of
segmental or suprasegmental phonetics and phonology,
regional/dialectal variation, historical change, systematic comparison
with other Celtic or minority languages, sociolinguistic
considerations, and/or applied linguistic topics such as language
policy and attitudes. The selected student will be responsible for the
design and execution of their own research topic within the general
remit discussed with the supervisor.

Applicants must meet the general requirements for PhD entry set by UCD

mes/), the College of Arts & Humanities, and the School of Irish,
Celtic Studies & Folklore

in order to be considered. In addition:

Applicants must have:
 - A bachelor’s degree of at least upper second class (2.i), or
equivalent
 - Knowledge of Modern Irish

Applicants will ideally have:
 - A master’s degree, or equivalent, in a relevant field
 - Experience of independent research (e.g. an undergraduate or
master’s thesis)
 - Training in linguistics
 - Fluency in Modern Irish and/or knowledge of another language
relevant to their proposed topic (e.g. Welsh)
