Focus: The Summer School "Methods in Language Sciences" offers 10
multi-day modules/courses on various topics, covering both
quantitative and qualitative methods:

- Introduction to R
- Introduction to statistics with R
- Categorical data analysis with R
- Multivariate data analysis with R
- Natural Language Processing with Python
- PRAAT
- Eye-tracking
- Linguistic ethnography
- Bayesian data analysis
- Research data management

Each module involves 15 contact hours. Because the modules are partly
held in parallel sessions, participants have to choose one or two
modules to follow (see the Programme on the website for more details).
Minimum Education Level: Master

Special Qualifications:
Please refer to the course descriptions on the website for the
prerequisites for each specific course.

A novelty in 2024 is the option to follow a whole “track” of either
introductory-level or advanced statistical modules as a full
curriculum. If you are interested in statistical training, then you
can select the track which best suits your background knowledge:

Novice track = Module 1 Introduction to R + Module 12 Introduction to
statistics with R
Expert track = Module 2 Categorical data analysis with R + Module 10
Multivariate data analysis with R

Description:
Top quality research requires outstanding methodological skills. That
is why the Department of Linguistics and the Department of
Translation, Interpreting and Communication of Ghent University will
jointly organize a Summer School on “Methods in Language Sciences” in
July 2024. The summer school caters to (junior and senior) researchers
from various scientific disciplines such as e.g. linguistics,
translation and interpreting studies, psycholinguistics and language
acquisition research, computational linguistics, sociolinguistics and
pragmatics, linguistic ethnography etc.

Tuition: 300.0 euro
Tuition Explanation: 1 module: €300
2 modules: €400

This includes coffee breaks (morning and/or afternoon, depending on
your curriculum) and lunch (incl. drinks).

UGent PhD and postdocs: The summer school is free of charge for
PhD-students and post-docs affiliated with UGent, since their
registration is sponsored by the Doctoral School. This includes coffee
breaks (morning and/or afternoon, depending on your curriculum) and
lunch (incl. drinks).
