The Language Technology Group in Macquarie University's Department of
Computing in Sydney, Australia, is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to work
in the area of natural language generation.
Applicants must have a PhD in an area closely related to natural language
processing or have equivalent experience, and must have a strong publishing
record and a demonstrated ability for independent research.
Preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate practical
abilities in the construction of linguistic technologies. Some experience in
building or using natural language generation tools or systems would be an
advantage.

curriculum developers to work on Software and Internet ITS (Interactive

Linguist:
Knowledge of Syntax and a knowledge of English Grammar required. Must also

will entail working with programmers and curriculum developers to improve
lexicographical, syntactic, and standard grammar tools made from the Ergo
parser. The main project is the development of interactive tutors which
use a 3-D character to do interactive question and answer exchanges with
users in the areas of ESL, Geography, and Biology. The use of in-house
tools as well as standard software required. Temporary for now (six to
twelve month project), perhaps long term.
ESL Curriculum Developers:
Experience teaching ESL and in Curriculum development. Must have a good
eye for English grammar. The position entails designing and writing
curriculum for Interactive tutors. Job will entail working with
programmers and linguists to improve lexicographical, syntactic, and
standard grammar tools made from the Ergo parser. The main project is the

ATR in Kyoto, Japan is looking for a talented and
experienced mathematician (good probability
background) / computer scientist who is interested in
coming to Japan and joining an exciting research
project in statistical natural language processing.
The overall goal of the project is speech-to-speech
translation between Japanese and a variety of
different languages, including English and French.
The research group which the candidate would become
part of has developed and is refining a natural
language parsing system based on statistical machine
learning algorithms. The
job begins ideally in April/May, 2000 and lasts for
1-2 years. Later start dates are possible, though not
a first choice.
A qualified candidate must have the Ph.D. degree,
preferably math, physics, computer science; with
extensive programming experience and expertise in C++.
Ability to innovate approaches to applied
mathematical problems in the area of probability
required. Experience with statistical modelling within
general pattern recognition field also important.
Familiarity with natural language field a plus but not
absoutely necessary. Candidate should know UNIX well
and in general be a highly expert programmer. This is
not a job for those who are theoreticians only, but
rather is for someone who is equally at home with
issues of statistical modelling theory, experimental
method, and
detailed coding matters.
