syntactic component. Native French language proficiency and an advanced
degree in Linguistics, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline
are required. Other desirable qualifications include experience in
linguistic research, with an emphasis on syntax, semantics, or discourse
analysis; familiarity with Natural Language Processing; a flexible
approach to linguistic theory; practical experience with software
development and NLP implementation issues.

Linguistic Test Engineer - Spanish
Primary responsibility is the creation and maintenance of linguistic test
data for Microsoft's Spanish Natural Language Processing system.
Responsibilities include analyzing a corpus in Spanish and creating
expected linguistic output based on a specification, evaluating linguistic
coverage, reporting accuracy, finding and tracking linguistic bugs, and

including information retrieval, information extraction, generation, and
natural language command & control of applications, all of which require
an integrated understanding of computational semantics. Candidates are
welcomed from a broad variety of disciplines and backgrounds, for example,
with expertise in any of the following areas: statistical approaches to
problems like word sense disambiguation or word correlation;
knowledge-based techniques involving semantic networks or ontologies;
computational approaches to "dynamic" semantic theories like DRT, Dynamic
Montague Grammar or Context/File Change Semantics; inter alia. Qualified
applicants should have an advanced degree in Linguistics, Computational
Linguistics, or CS (or equivalent experience), strong coding skills, and a

MLTT (the MultiLingual Theory and Technology Group) a deux postes à

XRCE Grenoble Laboratory is a world leader in natural language, distributed
systems, and knowledge management research. It forms an integral part of
Xerox's research culture with sister laboratories in Cambridge (UK) and
Palo Alto (PARC, California).

The MultiLingual Theory and Technology Group has two open
positions for researchers in semantic processing of
natural language texts. In collaboration with a group of
researchers, the candidates will investigate and elaborate
state-of-the-art techniques for representing the contents
of natural language texts, for merging these contents with
background information (such as ontologies) and for
performing some reasoning on the basis of such
representations. The resulting techniques will be applied
to tasks such as knowledge extraction from unrestricted
texts.

Research Focus & Qualifications:

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in a relevant
discipline e.g. computer science, linguistics, mathematics etc. Hands-on
experience with applying a wide range of NLP techniques is also
desirable. Proficiency in English is required.

XRCE offers excellent salaries and benefits (and relocation package),
excellent computing facilities and the opportunity to work in a leading
international research institute. The successful candidates will be located
in Grenoble (France), in the foothills of the Alps, providing access to
some of the best outdoors in the world (activities in this region include:
snowboarding, skiing, golfing, hiking, kayaking, paragliding, rock
climbing, fishing etc.). Please refer to the XRCE webpages

Palo Alto (PARC, California).

The MultiLingual Theory and Technology Group has an open position for a
post-doc, for a duration 18 months, starting in May 2001. In collaboration
with a small group of other researchers, the candidate will elaborate
state-of-the-art robust language components for English, based on our new
system for text analysis and on existing language resources. The primary
focus is on expanding our English dependency grammar, with a view of
applying it to higher-level linguistic processes (coreference, word sense &
structural disambiguation,s paraphrase, mapping onto knowledge
representation). Those linguistic components will be used and tested in a
number of large-scale applications, such as knowledge extraction in
genomics.

Research Focus & Qualifications:

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in a relevant
discipline e.g. computer science, linguistics, mathematics etc. Hands-on
