Aim of the workshop:
-----------------------------
The aim of the proposed workshop is to bring together key players
in the field of resources and evaluation in order to make a first
step towards the creation of a broadly supported Roadmap for
Language Resources, i.e. a broadly supported view on the longer,
medium and shorter term needs and priorities. This activity
should be seen in the context of ELSNET's other roadmapping
activities (see http://www.elsnet.org/roadmap.html), which aim at
developing a technological roadmap for the whole field of Human
Language Technologies.
The purpose of such roadmaps is to give the R&D community an
instrument to identify opportunities for concertation of their
activities and better exploitation of possible synergies between
players all over the world.

Scope of this workshop:
----------------------------------
As there is no standard model for roadmaps for resources and
evaluation available, we will narrow the scope of this
roadmapping workshop to a specific sub-area: Multimodal Language
Resources and Evaluation. This will make our discussions more
focused and concrete, and it will also allow us to exploit the
fact that this workshop will take place the day after the
workshop dedicated to Multimodal Resources and Evaluation of
Multimodal Systems (MREMS) in general.

La conférence s'articulera autour de deux grands thèmes : (i)
l'interprétation du verbe "être" et des constructions le faisant intervenir,
et (ii) le liage existentiel des indéfinis. Ces deux thèmes renvoient à la
notion d'existence et un objectif de la conférence est d'explorer les
connexions possibles entre ces thèmes. La conférence sera centrée sur la
syntaxe et la sémantique formelle de l'existence, avec une session spéciale
sur le traitement computationel des constructions existentielles.

Nous invitons à soumettre des résumés pour des présentations de 30 minutes
(suivies de 10 minutes de discussion) dans tous les domaines pertinents et
en particulier sur les questions suivantes:
- La sémantique de "être": combien d'interprétations? Y a-t'il des données
inter-linguistiques justifiant plusieurs interprétations pour "être"?
Prédication dans les langues qui ont plus d'un équivalent pour "être" (e.g.
l'espagnol).
- La syntaxe et la sémantique de constructions dans lesquelles "être"
apparaît: "c'est SN", "ceci est SN" et autres constructions copulatives à
travers les langues; clivages et pseudo-clivages; l'auxiliaire "être" et
sélection de l'auxiliaire.
- Constructions existentielles en "être" et constructions existentielles en
"avoir".
- Existence et négation.
- Sources de liage existentiel pour la variable introduite par les indéfinis
dans la représentation logique. Asymétries syntaxiques par rapport à la
source de liage existentiel (e.g. l'ancrage spatio-temporel d'une phrase
comme lieur des sujets indéfinis versus l'incorporation sémantique des
objets indéfinis). Si, comme il l'a été proposé au cours des dernières
années, les indéfinis introduisent une variable fonctionnelle, comment cette
variable est-elle liée?
- Présupposition existentielle et degrés de (in)définitude.
- Traitement informatique (analyse et génération) des constructions
existentielles.

Les langues de la conférence seront le français et l'anglais.

The Mediterranean Language Technology Centre,
MLTC, launched by ELRA & ELDA in Rabat, Morocco

ELRA & ELDA to promote Human Language Technologies (HLT)
for the Mediterranean Languages thanks to the MLTC centre.

The project of the creation of an organisation similar to the
European Language Resources Association (ELRA) was
initiated by ELRA & ELDA, to promote HLT in the Mediterranean
countries and encourage research and development in this area.

The Mediterranean Language Technology Centre (MLTC) centre
was officially launched at the end of year 2001. It is located in Rabat,
Morocco, where a partner team has been set up.

Since its creation, MLTC has been working closely with ELRA & ELDA
to handle every aspect related to the resources and processing of the
Mediterranean languages, in the framework of some European and
international projects. The centre will also be responsible for a number
of other activities and tasks outsourced by ELRA & ELDA.

Call for papers

The last few years have seen a growing interest in evaluating human
language technology (HLT) in general and its applications to
information access and management in particular. Several initiatives
have been conducted in Europe and in the United States. The first
initiatives on HLT evaluation can be traced back to the Defence
Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the Japanese programs on
Machine Translation Evaluation. The DARPA/NIST (National Institute of
Standards and Technology) Projects continued on a more regular basis
and particularly with the Text Retrieval Conferences (TREC) and the
Message Understanding Conferences (MUC). More projects are gaining
momentum, be they independent or part of the famous TREC Tracks
(Language Engineering Track, Question & Answering (Q & A) track), or
within the context of the Translingual Information Detection,
Extraction, and Summarization (TIDES) Document Understanding
Conference (DUC), Cross-Language Information Retrieval (CLIR), Text
Summarization Systems, Filtering, or Spoken Document Retrieval.

Some evaluation projects have been supported within the programs of
the European Commission (EAGLES, ELSE, ISLE, SQALE, etc.) others have
been conducted within national programs (the French evaluation
projects: GRACE Project for evaluating part-of-speech taggers, the AUF
four Projects on evaluating Text Retrieval Systems, Alignment
Technology, Terminology Acquisition System Evaluations, and Message
Understanding). These many endeavours show the relevance of HLT
evaluations. Researchers and practitioners in the field of information
are interested, by an assessment of the contribution of these
technologies in order to measure the progress achieved, to compare
different approaches to a given problem and to assess system usability
and user satisfaction.

This Special Issue of Knowledge Organization (scheduled as volume 29,
number 3/4) will aim at bringing together the community of researchers
in the field of HLT from the perspective of Knowledge Organization,
Information Access and Management. Moreover, it will look forward to
providing an overview of the state-of-the-art of HLT, discuss
problems, exchange information on the use of this technology in
monolingual and multilingual environments, discuss evaluation
methodologies and metrics and promote initiatives for international
cooperation in these areas.

We invite original and unpublished submissions to the special issue
covering any of, but not limited to, the following
topics. Contributions previously published in a language other than
English may be considered.

We are happy to announce a new resource available via ELRA:

S0123 Basque Spoken Corpus, by John Aske (Professor Assistant,

A description is given below.

*** Basque Spoken Corpus, by John Aske (Professor Assistant,
Foreign Languages Department, Salem State College) ***

This is a collection of forty two narratives in the Basque language
(Euskara) by native speakers. It includes sound files (MP3 format)
and full detailed transcripts. Each of the narratives is a recounting
of a short, silent movie that the speaker has just watched to a friend
or acquaintance who has not seen the movie (no other person was
present in the room, just the recording equipment). Two short silent
movies were used to elicit the narratives: Twenty one of the narratives
correspond to the 7-minute silent movie The Pear Story (Chafe, ed., 1980)
and the other 21 are about a 12 minute collage from Charlie Chaplin's
Modern Times. The recordings were made as a part of a study on Basque
word order in 1993 (Aske 1997). The transcriptions are made following a
modified version of the guidelines given in Edwards and Lampert 1993. The
speakers were from different age groups, different dialects, and had differing
language abilities. Profiles of the speakers are also included. In addition to
the 42 narratives with transcripts, 53 additional sound tracks of
extemporaneous
speech and description of still images are also included.

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT: Research Position in Tutorial Dialogue

A research associate or postdoc is sought to participate in
a new project in the area of intelligent tutorial dialogue
systems teaching mathematics.

The goal of this research project is (1) to empirically
investigate flexible dialogue management strategies in
complex mathematics tutoring dialogues; (2) to develop an
experimental prototype system gradually embodying the
empirical findings.

The experimental system will engage in a dialogue in natural
language (and perhaps other modes of communication) and help
a student to understand and produce mathematical proofs. It
is envisaged that the (tutorial-)dialogue component would be
embedded within the ActiveMath learning environment
(http://www.mathweb.org/activemath/) and make use of the the
mathematical assistent system Omega
(http://www.ags.uni-sb.de/~omega/).

The qualifications for this position are a PhD or equivalent
in a research area related to Natural Language Processing.
Interest and experience with dialogue systems, natural
language analysis and/or generation, empirical methods
and/or annotation are especially desirable.

The position is located at the University of the Saarland,
Saarbruecken, Germany, at the Computational Linguistics
department (http://www.coli-uni-sb.de).  The research is
carried out in cooperation with the Computer Science
department (http://www.cs.uni-sb.de/ and
http://www-ags.dfki.uni-sb.de/).

The duration of this research position is for 2 years (with
the possibility of an extension). Salary of BAT2 level

Le but de cette conférence est de faire se rencontrer des chercheurs
dans le domaine de la recherche et de l'extraction d'informations et,
plus particulièrement des chercheurs concernés par l'utilité
d'informations sémantiques (provenant de ressources sémantiques ou
de traitements linguistiques) pour affiner les requêtes.



Buts et thèmes de l'atelier
---------------------------

Plusieurs expériences ont été conduites depuis les 15 dernières années,
en utilisant diverses ressources et techniques (thesaurus, listes de
synonymes, désambiguïsation sémantique, etc.) afin d'améliorer le
traitement des requêtes. Néanmoins, les conclusions tirées de ces
expériences sont très différentes de l'une à l'autre. Certains résultats
ont conduit à affirmer que l'utilisation de connaissances sémantiques
n'apporte rien, voire dégrade les résultats tandis que d'autres amènent

la conclusion que des connaissances sémantiques augmentent
significativement les performances des systèmes de recherche
d'information.

Certaines questions se posent donc :
- Pourquoi les conclusions sont-elles si différentes ?
- La divergence de résultat provient-elle d'une différence de
  méthodologie ?
- Cette divergence provient-elle d'une différence dans les ressources
  utilisées ?
- Quelles sont les ressources les plus adéquates pour ce genre de
  travaux ?
- Les résultats obtenus à partir de ressources créées manuellement
  sont-ils très différents de ceux obtenus avec des ressources extraites
  automatiquement ?
- Depuis la constitution de corpus jusqu'à la structuration de
  terminologie, quels sont les impératifs auquels les méthodologie
  d'acquistion doivent se plier afin d'être pertinent pour une
  application donnée ?
- Quel est l'apport de ressources spécialisées dans un domaine ?
- Les cadres d'évaluation actuels (par exemple TREC) sont-ils appropriés
  pour l'évaluation de ces résultats ?

Ces questions sont fondamentales, non seulement pour les travaux en
recherche documentaire mais aussi pour l'extraction d'informations, la
réponse aux questions, le filtrage, etc. Leur importance est encore plus
critique pour des applications multilingues où, par exemple, la question
de la désambiguïsation avant traduction est fondamentale.

De plus, la diversité croissante des documents monolingues et
multilingues sur la Toile demande à prêter attention au lien entre
la variabilité lexicale et le genre textuel tout en tenant compte
de la réutilisabilité des ressources.

Le but de cet atelier est de faire se rencontrer des chercheurs dans le
domaine de la recherche d'information et, plus particulièrement, des
chercheurs intéressés par l'utilisation de connaissances et de traitements
sémantiques pour l'amélioration du traitement des requêtes.

L'atelier fournira l'occasion, pour les participants, de présenter leur
point de vue. Une table ronde suivra et permettra aux conférenciers de
faire le point sur l'état de l'art, les résultats passés et en cours et
les raisons qui peuvent expliquer les considérables différences que l'on
constate dans les conclusions des différentes expériences. Enfin, ils
tenteront d'identifier les directions à prendre pour les recherches
futures.

  Creating and Using Semantics for Information Retrieval and Filtering

Third International Conference on Language Resources and Evaluation

                       (LREC 2002)


The goal of this full day workshop is to bring together researchers
in the domain of information management and extraction, and in particular,
researchers concerned by the utility of enhancing queries with semantic
information gleaned from languages resources and processes.



Workshop scope and aims
-----------------------

Several experiments have been carried out in the last 15 years
investigating the use of various resources and techniques (e.g.,
thesauri, synonyms, word sense disambiguation, etc.) to help refine or
enhance queries. However, the conclusions drawn on the basis of these
experiments vary widely. Results of some studies have led to the
conclusion that semantic information serves no purpose and even
degrades results, while others have concluded that the use of semantic
information drawn from external resources significantly increases the
performance of retrieval software. At this point, several question
arise:

  - Why do these conclusions vary so widely?
  - Is the divergence a result of differences in methodology?
  - Is the divergence a result of a difference in resources? What
    are the most suitable resources? Do results using manually
    constructed resources differ in significant ways from results
    using automatically extracted information?
  - From corpus building to terminology structuring, to which
    methodological requirements resources acquisition has to
    comply with in order to be relevant to a given application?
  - What is the contribution of specialized resources?
  - Are present frameworks for evaluation (e.g., TREC) appropriate
    for evaluation of results?.

These questions are fundamental not only to research in document retrieval,
but also for information searching, question answering, filtering, etc.
Their importance is even more acute for multilingual applications, where,
for instance, the question of whether to disambiguate before translating
is fundamental.

Moreover, the increasing diversity of monolingual as well as multilingual
documents on the Web invite to focus attention on lexical variability in
connection with textual genre and with questioning the resources
reusability stance.

The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers in the domain
of document retrieval, and in particular, researchers on both sides of the
question of the utility of enhancing queries with semantic information
gleaned from languages resources and processes.

The workshop will provide a forum for presentation of the different points
of view, followed by a roundtable in which the participants will assess the
state of the art, consider the results of past and on-going work and the
possible reasons for the considerable differences in their conclusions.
Ultimately, they will attempt to identify future directions for research.

The registration fee for the workshop is

     90 Euro if you are attending LREC
     140 Euro if you are NOT attending LREC

The fee includes two coffee breaks and the workshop proceedings.

Participation in the workshop is limited by the venue. Requests for

The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra, at the Lago
Maggiore in Northern Italy, is inviting applications for grants at post-doc
level (Ph.D. or 4+ years post-graduate research experience) in a variety of
fields, including Language Technology. Deadline for applications is 15 June
2002 (post stamp).

Applications by women and by citizens of any of the following countries are
particularly welcome: Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary,
Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia.

La revue LEXICOMETRICA s'adresse aux chercheurs, aux étudiants, aux
professionnels de la communication et de la fouille de données
textuelles... intéressés par les travaux théoriques et pratiques menés dans
les domaines suivants : lexicométrie / statistique textuelle, linguistiques
de corpus, extraction d'informations à partir de corpus de texte,
acquisition de connaissances...

Elle est publiée sur Internet et rassemble des articles de recherche ou des
comptes-rendus d'expériences. Assisté d'un réseau de correspondants, son
comité de rédaction sélectionne les articles à paraître. Un sommaire à
double entrée permet d'accéder aux articles à la fois par date de parution
et par thème.


THEME DU NUMERO

De nombreux travaux ont montrél?utilité des corpus parallèles (composés de
textes accompagnés leur traduction) pour de multiples applications:
lexicographie, terminologie, traduction automatique, recherche
d?informations, enseignement des langues, etc. [voir un panorama dans
Véronis (2000)]. L?exploitation de ces corpus passe par leur «alignement»,
c?est-à-dire la mise en correspondance d?unités de différents types entre
les textes et les traductions. Une récente campagne d?évaluation (ARCADE) a
montré que l?alignement des phrases était désormais une technique bien
maîtrisée. En revanche, l?alignement lexical, c?est-à-dire la mise en
correspondance de mots et locutions entre les deux langues, reste très
largement à améliorer. Le présent numéro spécial de la revue LEXICOMETRICA
accueillera des articles sur les techniques et problèmes théoriques de
l?alignement lexical, aussi bien dans les corpus parallèles que dans les
corpus comparables, c?est-à-dire composés de textes traitant des mêmes
thèmes dans plusieurs langues sans être des traductions.

APPEL A COMMUNICATIONS ET A PARTICIPATION

CALL FOR PAPERS AND PARTICIPATION

Les 2emes Journees de la linguistique de corpus auront lieu a Lorient
les 12, 13 et 14 septembre 2002.

Elles sont organisees par le Centre de Recherche en Litterature,
Linguistique et Civilisation (CRELLIC - UBS Lorient) avec la
collaboration de Valoria (UBS Vannes) et sont egalement soutenues par
les Departements LEA et LLCE de l'Universite de Bretagne Sud,
l'Association pour le Traitement Automatique des Langues (ATALA) et la
jeune equipe Analyse Linguistique et Pratiques Langagieres (ALPL,
Nantes).

Ces 2emes Journees de la Linguistique de Corpus visent a promouvoir le
developpement de la linguistique de corpus en France en reunissant des
chercheurs d'horizons divers s'interessant a l'utilisation de
l'informatique pour l'analyse des faits de langues, notamment dans les
domaines suivants :

- la lexicologie et lexicographie, mono~ et bilingues,

- la terminologie,

- la traductologie,

- la linguistique appliquee et la description linguistique,

-     ...

Les journees s'etaleront sur deux jours et demi avec trois conferences
plenieres suivies par des communications orales d'une trentaine de
minutes. Il y aura egalement des communications affichees. Nous
envisageons de publier les actes de ce colloque. Les conferenciers
invites seront :

Claire Blanche Benveniste : Les corpus de langue parlee

Francois Rastier : Des occurrences aux formes semantiques.

Aim of the workshop:
-----------------------------
The aim of the proposed workshop is to bring together key players
in the field of resources and evaluation in order to make a first
step towards the creation of a broadly supported Roadmap for
Language Resources, i.e. a broadly supported view on the longer,
medium and shorter term needs and priorities. This activity
should be seen in the context of ELSNET's other roadmapping
activities (see http://www.elsnet.org/roadmap.html), which aim at
developing a technological roadmap for the whole field of Human
Language Technologies.
The purpose of such roadmaps is to give the R&D community an
instrument to identify opportunities for concertation of their
activities and better exploitation of possible synergies between
players all over the world.

Scope of this workshop:

As there is no standard model for roadmaps for resources and
evaluation available, we will narrow the scope of this
roadmapping workshop to a specific sub-area: Multimodal Language
Resources and Evaluation. This will make our discussions more
focused and concrete, and it will also allow us to exploit the
fact that this workshop will take place the day after the
workshop dedicated to Multimodal Resources and Evaluation of
Multimodal Systems (MREMS) in general.

notion d'existence et un objectif de la conf?rence est d'explorer les
connexions possibles entre ces th?mes. La conf?rence sera centr?e sur la
syntaxe et la s?mantique formelle de l'existence, avec une session sp?ciale
sur le traitement computationel des constructions existentielles.

The Mediterranean Language Technology Centre,
MLTC, launched by ELRA & ELDA in Rabat, Morocco

ELRA & ELDA to promote Human Language Technologies (HLT)
for the Mediterranean Languages thanks to the MLTC centre.

The project of the creation of an organisation similar to the
European Language Resources Association (ELRA) was
initiated by ELRA & ELDA, to promote HLT in the Mediterranean
countries and encourage research and development in this area.

The Mediterranean Language Technology Centre (MLTC) centre
was officially launched at the end of year 2001. It is located in Rabat,
Morocco, where a partner team has been set up.

Since its creation, MLTC has been working closely with ELRA & ELDA
to handle every aspect related to the resources and processing of the
Mediterranean languages, in the framework of some European and
international projects. The centre will also be responsible for a number
of other activities and tasks outsourced by ELRA & ELDA.

Thanks to the MLTC centre and our involvement in the various sectors
covered by HLT, we expect to foster research and development in HLT for
all the Mediterranean languages.

Call for papers

The last few years have seen a growing interest in evaluating human
language technology (HLT) in general and its applications to
information access and management in particular. Several initiatives
have been conducted in Europe and in the United States. The first
initiatives on HLT evaluation can be traced back to the Defence
Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the Japanese programs on
Machine Translation Evaluation. The DARPA/NIST (National Institute of
Standards and Technology) Projects continued on a more regular basis
and particularly with the Text Retrieval Conferences (TREC) and the
Message Understanding Conferences (MUC). More projects are gaining
momentum, be they independent or part of the famous TREC Tracks
(Language Engineering Track, Question & Answering (Q & A) track), or
within the context of the Translingual Information Detection,
Extraction, and Summarization (TIDES) Document Understanding
Conference (DUC), Cross-Language Information Retrieval (CLIR), Text
Summarization Systems, Filtering, or Spoken Document Retrieval.

Some evaluation projects have been supported within the programs of
the European Commission (EAGLES, ELSE, ISLE, SQALE, etc.) others have
been conducted within national programs (the French evaluation
projects: GRACE Project for evaluating part-of-speech taggers, the AUF
four Projects on evaluating Text Retrieval Systems, Alignment
Technology, Terminology Acquisition System Evaluations, and Message
Understanding). These many endeavours show the relevance of HLT
evaluations. Researchers and practitioners in the field of information
are interested, by an assessment of the contribution of these
technologies in order to measure the progress achieved, to compare
different approaches to a given problem and to assess system usability
and user satisfaction.

This Special Issue of Knowledge Organization (scheduled as volume 29,
number 3/4) will aim at bringing together the community of researchers
in the field of HLT from the perspective of Knowledge Organization,
Information Access and Management. Moreover, it will look forward to
providing an overview of the state-of-the-art of HLT, discuss
problems, exchange information on the use of this technology in
monolingual and multilingual environments, discuss evaluation
methodologies and metrics and promote initiatives for international
cooperation in these areas.

We invite original and unpublished submissions to the special issue
covering any of, but not limited to, the following
topics. Contributions previously published in a language other than
English may be considered.

We are happy to announce a new resource available via ELRA:

S0123 Basque Spoken Corpus, by John Aske (Professor Assistant,

A description is given below.

*** Basque Spoken Corpus, by John Aske (Professor Assistant,
Foreign Languages Department, Salem State College) ***

This is a collection of forty two narratives in the Basque language
(Euskara) by native speakers. It includes sound files (MP3 format)
and full detailed transcripts. Each of the narratives is a recounting
of a short, silent movie that the speaker has just watched to a friend
or acquaintance who has not seen the movie (no other person was
present in the room, just the recording equipment). Two short silent
movies were used to elicit the narratives: Twenty one of the narratives
correspond to the 7-minute silent movie The Pear Story (Chafe, ed., 1980)
and the other 21 are about a 12 minute collage from Charlie Chaplin's
Modern Times. The recordings were made as a part of a study on Basque
word order in 1993 (Aske 1997). The transcriptions are made following a
modified version of the guidelines given in Edwards and Lampert 1993. The
speakers were from different age groups, different dialects, and had differing
language abilities. Profiles of the speakers are also included. In addition to
the 42 narratives with transcripts, 53 additional sound tracks of
extemporaneous
speech and description of still images are also included.

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT: Research Position in Tutorial Dialogue

A research associate or postdoc is sought to participate in
a new project in the area of intelligent tutorial dialogue
systems teaching mathematics.

The goal of this research project is (1) to empirically
investigate flexible dialogue management strategies in
complex mathematics tutoring dialogues; (2) to develop an
experimental prototype system gradually embodying the
empirical findings.

The experimental system will engage in a dialogue in natural
language (and perhaps other modes of communication) and help
a student to understand and produce mathematical proofs. It
is envisaged that the (tutorial-)dialogue component would be
embedded within the ActiveMath learning environment
(http://www.mathweb.org/activemath/) and make use of the the
mathematical assistent system Omega
(http://www.ags.uni-sb.de/~omega/).

The qualifications for this position are a PhD or equivalent
in a research area related to Natural Language Processing.
Interest and experience with dialogue systems, natural
language analysis and/or generation, empirical methods
and/or annotation are especially desirable.

The position is located at the University of the Saarland,
Saarbruecken, Germany, at the Computational Linguistics

carried out in cooperation with the Computer Science
department (http://www.cs.uni-sb.de/ and

The duration of this research position is for 2 years (with
the possibility of an extension). Salary of BAT2 level

Le but de cette conf?rence est de faire se rencontrer des chercheurs
dans le domaine de la recherche et de l'extraction d'informations et,
plus particuli?rement des chercheurs concern?s par l'utilit?
d'informations s?mantiques (provenant de ressources s?mantiques ou
de traitements linguistiques) pour affiner les requ?tes.



Buts et th?mes de l'atelier
---------------------------

Plusieurs exp?riences ont ?t? conduites depuis les 15 derni?res ann?es,
en utilisant diverses ressources et techniques (thesaurus, listes de
synonymes, d?sambigu?sation s?mantique, etc.) afin d'am?liorer le
traitement des requ?tes. N?anmoins, les conclusions tir?es de ces
exp?riences sont tr?s diff?rentes de l'une ? l'autre. Certains r?sultats
ont conduit ? affirmer que l'utilisation de connaissances s?mantiques
n'apporte rien, voire d?grade les r?sultats tandis que d'autres am?nent

la conclusion que des connaissances s?mantiques augmentent
significativement les performances des syst?mes de recherche
d'information.

Certaines questions se posent donc :
- Pourquoi les conclusions sont-elles si diff?rentes ?
- La divergence de r?sultat provient-elle d'une diff?rence de
  m?thodologie ?
- Cette divergence provient-elle d'une diff?rence dans les ressources
  utilis?es ?
- Quelles sont les ressources les plus ad?quates pour ce genre de
  travaux ?
- Les r?sultats obtenus ? partir de ressources cr??es manuellement
  sont-ils tr?s diff?rents de ceux obtenus avec des ressources extraites
  automatiquement ?
- Depuis la constitution de corpus jusqu'? la structuration de
  terminologie, quels sont les imp?ratifs auquels les m?thodologie
  d'acquistion doivent se plier afin d'?tre pertinent pour une
  application donn?e ?
- Quel est l'apport de ressources sp?cialis?es dans un domaine ?
- Les cadres d'?valuation actuels (par exemple TREC) sont-ils appropri?s
  pour l'?valuation de ces r?sultats ?

Ces questions sont fondamentales, non seulement pour les travaux en
recherche documentaire mais aussi pour l'extraction d'informations, la
r?ponse aux questions, le filtrage, etc. Leur importance est encore plus
critique pour des applications multilingues o?, par exemple, la question
de la d?sambigu?sation avant traduction est fondamentale.

De plus, la diversit? croissante des documents monolingues et
multilingues sur la Toile demande ? pr?ter attention au lien entre
la variabilit? lexicale et le genre textuel tout en tenant compte
de la r?utilisabilit? des ressources.

Le but de cet atelier est de faire se rencontrer des chercheurs dans le
domaine de la recherche d'information et, plus particuli?rement, des
chercheurs int?ress?s par l'utilisation de connaissances et de traitements
s?mantiques pour l'am?lioration du traitement des requ?tes.

L'atelier fournira l'occasion, pour les participants, de pr?senter leur
point de vue. Une table ronde suivra et permettra aux conf?renciers de
faire le point sur l'?tat de l'art, les r?sultats pass?s et en cours et
les raisons qui peuvent expliquer les consid?rables diff?rences que l'on
constate dans les conclusions des diff?rentes exp?riences. Enfin, ils
tenteront d'identifier les directions ? prendre pour les recherches
futures.

  Creating and Using Semantics for Information Retrieval and Filtering

Third International Conference on Language Resources and Evaluation

                       (LREC 2002)


The goal of this full day workshop is to bring together researchers
in the domain of information management and extraction, and in particular,
researchers concerned by the utility of enhancing queries with semantic
information gleaned from languages resources and processes.



Workshop scope and aims
-----------------------

Several experiments have been carried out in the last 15 years
investigating the use of various resources and techniques (e.g.,
thesauri, synonyms, word sense disambiguation, etc.) to help refine or
enhance queries. However, the conclusions drawn on the basis of these
experiments vary widely. Results of some studies have led to the
conclusion that semantic information serves no purpose and even
degrades results, while others have concluded that the use of semantic
information drawn from external resources significantly increases the
performance of retrieval software. At this point, several question
arise:

  - Why do these conclusions vary so widely?
  - Is the divergence a result of differences in methodology?
  - Is the divergence a result of a difference in resources? What
    are the most suitable resources? Do results using manually
    constructed resources differ in significant ways from results
    using automatically extracted information?
  - From corpus building to terminology structuring, to which
    methodological requirements resources acquisition has to
    comply with in order to be relevant to a given application?
  - What is the contribution of specialized resources?
  - Are present frameworks for evaluation (e.g., TREC) appropriate
    for evaluation of results?.

These questions are fundamental not only to research in document retrieval,
but also for information searching, question answering, filtering, etc.
Their importance is even more acute for multilingual applications, where,
for instance, the question of whether to disambiguate before translating
is fundamental.

Moreover, the increasing diversity of monolingual as well as multilingual
documents on the Web invite to focus attention on lexical variability in
connection with textual genre and with questioning the resources
reusability stance.

The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers in the domain
of document retrieval, and in particular, researchers on both sides of the
question of the utility of enhancing queries with semantic information
gleaned from languages resources and processes.

The workshop will provide a forum for presentation of the different points
of view, followed by a roundtable in which the participants will assess the
state of the art, consider the results of past and on-going work and the
possible reasons for the considerable differences in their conclusions.
Ultimately, they will attempt to identify future directions for research.

The registration fee for the workshop is

     90 Euro if you are attending LREC
     140 Euro if you are NOT attending LREC

The fee includes two coffee breaks and the workshop proceedings.

The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra, at the Lago
Maggiore in Northern Italy, is inviting applications for grants at post-doc
level (Ph.D. or 4+ years post-graduate research experience) in a variety of
fields, including Language Technology. Deadline for applications is 15 June
2002 (post stamp).

Applications by women and by citizens of any of the following countries are
particularly welcome: Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary,
Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia.

THEME DU NUMERO

De nombreux travaux ont montr?l?utilit? des corpus parall?les (compos?s de
textes accompagn?s leur traduction) pour de multiples applications:
lexicographie, terminologie, traduction automatique, recherche
d?informations, enseignement des langues, etc. [voir un panorama dans
V?ronis (2000)]. L?exploitation de ces corpus passe par leur ?alignement?,
c?est-?-dire la mise en correspondance d?unit?s de diff?rents types entre
les textes et les traductions. Une r?cente campagne d??valuation (ARCADE) a
montr? que l?alignement des phrases ?tait d?sormais une technique bien

Dear Colleagues,

The Program Committee and the Organizing Committee of the COLING-2002
Conference are pleased to welcome participants from all countries to
join us in Taipei. Both lists of accepted papers and preliminary
program are available on (http://www.coling2002.sinica.edu.tw/).  The
on-line registration system is also open
(http://www.coling2002.sinica.edu.tw/r-online.html).

This year's main conference features three keynote speakers: Charles
J. Fillmore (Linking sense to syntax in FrameNet), William S.-Y. Wang
(Evolutionary Linguistics and Computer Modeling), and Hans Uszkoreit
(New Chances for Deep Linguistic Processing).  In addition to the
close to 200 papers and project notes that will be presented at the
main conference; there will also be over 100 papers featured at the 11
exciting post-conference workshops.  Four pre-conference tutorials
focus on pioneering inter-disciplinary areas: Computational
Linguistics and Chinese Language Processing, Bio-Informatics,
Probabilistic Computational Psycholinguistics, and Open Domain
Question-Answering.

Taipei as COLING2002's Conference site offers a unique mix of

2emes Journees de la Linguistique de Corpus

A brief summary in English follows. Our apologies for cross postings.

APPEL A COMMUNICATIONS ET A PARTICIPATION

CALL FOR PAPERS AND PARTICIPATION

Les 2emes Journees de la linguistique de corpus auront lieu a Lorient
les 12, 13 et 14 septembre 2002.

Elles sont organisees par le Centre de Recherche en Litterature,
Linguistique et Civilisation (CRELLIC - UBS Lorient) avec la
collaboration de Valoria (UBS Vannes) et sont egalement soutenues par
les Departements LEA et LLCE de l'Universite de Bretagne Sud,
l'Association pour le Traitement Automatique des Langues (ATALA) et la
jeune equipe Analyse Linguistique et Pratiques Langagieres (ALPL,
Nantes).

Ces 2emes Journees de la Linguistique de Corpus visent a promouvoir le
developpement de la linguistique de corpus en France en reunissant des
chercheurs d'horizons divers s'interessant a l'utilisation de
l'informatique pour l'analyse des faits de langues, notamment dans les
domaines suivants :

- la lexicologie et lexicographie, mono~ et bilingues,

- la terminologie,

- la traductologie,

- la linguistique appliquee et la description linguistique,

-     ...

Les journees s'etaleront sur deux jours et demi avec trois conferences
plenieres suivies par des communications orales d'une trentaine de
minutes. Il y aura egalement des communications affichees. Nous
envisageons de publier les actes de ce colloque. Les conferenciers
invites seront :

Elena Tognini Bonelli : L'approche inductive sur corpus

Claire Blanche Benveniste : Les corpus de langue parlee

Francois Rastier : Des occurrences aux formes semantiques.

Les personnes desirant faire une communication sont priees d'envoyer

This conference aims to bring together researchers working with
electronic corpora and lexical resources in France or in the French
Language. It is aimed principally at those working in teaching,
translating, lexicography and applied linguistics. The language of the
workshop will be French. It is the second in a series that started
with a one day conference held in Lorient in September 2001.
