In this conference we will focus on Arabic language technology and on the necessary language resources and tools for both research and commercial development of language technology for Arabic. Multilingual language technology is also highlighted, as well as general methodologies. Evaluation of modules and systems is another field which is closely related to language resources, because language resources are used to perform the evaluation. Substantial mutual benefits will be achieved by addressing these issues through international collaboration. For this reason, the conference is organised at the international level. The conference is held under the auspices of H.E. prof. Lexical resources play an essential role in these information systems. Such lexical resources need to provide information on many languages in a common framework and should be (re)usable in many applications (for automatic or human use). Many centers have been involved in national, european and international projects dedicated to building harmonized language resources and creating expertise in the maintenance and further development of standardized linguistic data. These resources include dictionaries, lexicons, thesauri, wordnets, and annotated corpora developed along the lines of best practices and recommendations. However, since the late 90's most efforts in scaling up these resources remain the responsibility of the local authorities, usually, with very low funding (if any) and few opportunities for academic recognition of this work. Hence, it is not surprising that many of the resource holders and developers have become reluctant to give free access to the latest resources. It is therefore currently rather unclear what the actual status is of these language resources. The goal of this workshop is to study problems involved in the development/management/reuse of lexical resources in a multilingual context. Moreover, this workshop will provide a forum for reviewing the state of language resources. The workshop is meant to bring to the international community qualitative and quantitative information about the most recent developments in the area of linguistic resources and their use in applications. As the workshop takes place in Europe, special attention will be given to submissions on resources for European languages (especially Central and Eastern European languages), but submission of innovative developments involving any language will be welcome. The intent of the workshop is not only to review academic developments but also to hear from industry, how these resources are used in new technology developments and what the current needs are in the field. Presentations, project notes and position papers are welcome. REGISTRATION ------------ To register for the workshop, please go to the following web site: [ http://www.issco.unige.ch/coling2004/ ] The (late) registration fee is CHF 150 for regular participants, and CHF 120 for students. Such databases are now felt indispensable in language science with the advances of language engineering. Like databases in genomics, multilingual lexical databases need rich annotations; they are complex, and they evolve as time goes by. The Papillon project is a Web collaborative project with the aim to build an open source multilingual lexical database for several languages (French, German, English, Japanese, Lao, Malay, Thai and Vietnamese). The provided lexical information has to be rich enough for a human to be able to query and generate his/her own tailored dictionary (e.g. for language learning or for translation work) and for NLP applications to be able to extract a whole range of data or to directly exploit some particular data. The 2004 Papillon workshop, the fifth in a series of workshops organized every year by the Papillon members, will aim at identifying problems relevant to the multilingual-lexical-database community. The workshop aims to promote exchanges between practitioners from several fields and is thus open to anybody working in a domain pertaining to lexical databases such as: databases, man-machine interface for dictionaries, data annotation, XML, standardization of dictionaries or lexical data; lexicography, translation, computational linguistics, etc. Tentative Program ----------------- The program will have a varied format, designed to maximize cross-fertilization among the various specialties, and to allow extended open discussion. Components of the program will include: - Tutorials on relevant models from linguistics, databases or annotation, e.g. the structure of lexical entries and semi-structured query languages; - Panel sessions on annotated text and lexicons (and possibly others); - Paper presentations reporting new research; - Demonstrations of systems for creating and/or managing lexical data. The following papers will be presented during the conference: 1. Refining Algorithm of Extracted Pattern Rule Set from Penn TreeBank Corpus. Akira Adachi, and Takenori Makino 2. LC-STAR: XML-coded Phonetic Lexica and Bilingual Corpora for Speech to Speech Translation. Folkert de Vriend, Nuria Castell, Jesus Giménez, and Giulio Maltese 3. The recent 15 years have seen a considerable advance in this field. A number of strong constraints have been proposed that restrict the sequencing and attaching of segments at various descriptive levels, as well as the interpretation of their interrelations. Early, and very influential, work on the sequencing and ordering of discourse segments has been done by Grosz & Sidner (1986). One of the best-known of the constraints on sequencing and accessibility of expressions across sentence boundaries is the RFC (Right Frontier Constraint), often associated with a paper of Polanyi (1988). Other relevant constraints are, e.g. the CSC (Coordinate Structure Constraint, Ross 1967) or the recently expressed MDC (Maximal Discourse Coherence, Asher & Lascarides 2003) principle. The goal of this workshop is to provide a forum for presenting recent research on constraints in discourse. The target areas include the recognition of discourse structure as well as the interpretation and generation of discourse in a broad variety of domains. The workshop offers a forum for researchers from diverse formal approaches, including but not limited to: - Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST) - Segmented Discourse Representation Theory (SDRT) - Tree Adjoining Grammars - The QUD Modell - Plan Based Reasoning - Abductive Reasoning - Gricean Pragmatics - Speech Act Theory We invite talks that further our theoretical understanding of the role of constraints in discourse, as well as empirical studies that shed light on their empirical validity. The conference is explicitly intended for discussion and comparison of theoretical accounts that lay the ground for applications. It is not intended as a platform for system demonstrations. Specific topics might relate to - Anaphora Resolution - Co-reference - Dialogical vs. Monological Discourse - Questions and Answers - Lexicon and Discourse Relations - Cognitive Modeling - Underspecification and Nonmonotonic Inferences etc. The organisers are planning to publish a selection of the results of the workshop either as a special issue of a journal or as a book. Publication (and workshop) language is English The workshop is endorsed by SIGdial, the Special Interest Group on Discourse and Dialogue, and SIGsem, the Special Interest Group on Semantics, of ACL. The conference is held under the auspices of H.E. prof. Ahmad Nazeef, the Egyptian Minister of Information & Telecommunications. **Programme Committee Co chairs: Khalid Choukri, ELDA - Evaluations and Language resources Distribution Agency, France Bente Maegaard, CST - Center for Sprogteknologi, University of Copenhagen, Denmark **Local Organising Committee Co chairs: Muhsin Rashwan, Cairo University, Egypt Muhammad Atiyya, The Engineering Company for Computer Systems Development, RDI, Egypt **Main sponsors: Sakhr, Egypt ELRA - European Language Resources Association Supported by The INCO-MED programme, the European Commission **Registration: Early registration before July 15th 2004 For more information please see: Conference web site: http://www.elda.fr/nemlar-conf Project web site: http://www.nemlar.org ************************************************************************* Mahtab Nikkhou mailto:nikkhou at elda.fr Language Resources Project Manager ELDA - Evaluation and Language resources Distribution Agency 55-57, rue Brillat-Savarin, 75013 Paris - France Tel.:+33 1 43 13 33 33 - Fax:+33 1 43 13 33 30 WWW: http://www.elda.fr LREC 2004 Conference: http://www.lrec-conf.org Nemlar Conference: http://www.elda.fr/nemlar-conf ************************************************************************* ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Message diffus? par la liste Langage Naturel Informations, abonnement : http://www.biomath.jussieu.fr/LN/LN-F/ English version : http://www.biomath.jussieu.fr/LN/LN/ Archives : http://listserv.linguistlist.org/archives/ln.html La liste LN est parrain?e par l'ATALA (Association pour le Traitement Automatique des Langues) Information et adh?sion : http://www.atala.org/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- From gddugkfyjueghd at ROMYMICHELE.COM Wed Jul 7 01:24:54 2004 From: gddugkfyjueghd at ROMYMICHELE.COM (Jonah Foster) Date: Wed, 7 Jul 2004 06:24:54 +0500 Subject: Discounted OEM Microsoft, Adobe, Autodesk, Corel software from Carson's SoftShop Message-ID: A movie camera is like having someone you have a crush on watching you from afar -- you pretend it's not there. Students of the European Master enrol in one of the two universities and are required to spend at least one semester at the other university; both universities adopt the ECTS credit system. In the context of the European Master Programme the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano co-operates with ITC-irst of Trento, while the Saarland University cooperates with the German Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI); these centres are connected by more than 10 years of close partnership. Human communication is at the heart of the information society and, in a richly multilingual area such as the European Union, full participation requires multilingual facilities for creating, exchanging and accessing information across language borders, throughout Europe and beyond. During the last few years, Language and Communication Technologies have seen a rapid increase in development at both research and industrial levels due to the fast growth of the Internet, of speech-based technologies, and the success of mobile communication. This has caused an acute need for continuous advancements in multilingual human language processing, cross-lingual information access, and multimodal human computer interaction. New expertise, skills and professional profiles are needed which can answer the growing requirements of our societies in the Human Language and Communication Technologies area. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The study programme at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano The European Master in Language and Communication Technologies is designed to meet the demands of industry and research in this rapidly growing area.
