Notifications sent by: Wednesday, January 7, 2005. Final papers due: Friday, February 4, 2005. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Special Track Coordinator Vasile Rus The University of Memphis Fedex Institute of Technology ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Call for Papers Goal We define Natural Language based Knowledge Representation as a representation that is closer to NL as opposed to being more artificial. The intuition is that such representations will be more expressive, or at least borrow as much as possible from the expressiveness of NL. The goal of this Special Track is to re-assess the status of Natural Language (NL) based Knowledge Representations (KR) and systems. It was believed that NL-based KR systems would deliver representational and inferential properties of natural language but the hard issues in NL such as ambiguity, context-dependency and the complexity of syntax, semantics and pragmatics limited in the past the progress of building promising knowledge processing systems. Among the advantages of building NL-based KR systems are: 1. NL-based systems would be user friendly 2. Most human knowledge is encoded and transmitted via natural language and thus NL-based KR are a natural development 3. searching on the Internet has become a necessity and a daily task for most of us; natural language is heavily used in this task since more than 90% of the web information is textual 4. NL-based knowledge processing sytems would provide a uniform symbolic representation for encoding knowledge and processing it 5. it is hard to match expressiveness and precision of natural language, particularly in not (well) formalized domains Recent advances of Natural Language Processing (NLP) in the areas of syntactic parsing, semantics and pragmatics have opened new perspectives for developing expressive KR and building promising NL-based knowledge processing systems. A special track to re-assess the new perspectives is needed and this Special Track aims to satisfy this need. Topics We invite highly original papers that describe: 1. novel, expressive NL-based representations 2. multi-level representations 3. NL-based inference methods and reasoning engines 4. evaluation techniques for NL-based KR 5. challenges in NL-based representations and in deriving such representations from NL texts, especially how recent advances in NL technologies provide new opportunities for knowledge aquisition and processing 6. techniques for coreference resolution, word sense disambiguation, information extraction, predicate-argument structure, frame semantics, preposition semantics, syntactic parsing, named entity recognition, etc. and their impact on NL-based KR 7. NL-based KR in dialogue management 8. NL-based KR in Question/Query Answering 9. NL-based KR in auto tutoring systems 10. NL-based KR in Information Retrieval 11. large knowledge bases construction using NL-based KR 12. scalability issues of systems built using NL-based KR 13. other related issues Submission Guidelines Interested authors should format their papers according to AAAI formatting guidelines. The papers should not exceed 6 pages and are due by October 22, 2004. Please note the change from 5 to 6 pages from the first CFP. Additional pages (7 and more) have to be cleared by the program chairs and will be $100 each. The papers should not identify the author(s) in any manner. Authors should indicate the special track if one exists that closely matches the topic of their paper. All submissions will be done electronically via the FLAIRS web submission system available through the paper submission site at http://earth.cs.ccsu.edu/~flairs/submission.html. Conference Proceedings Papers will be refereed and all accepted papers will appear in the conference proceedings which will be published by AAAI Press. Selected authors will be invited to submit extended versions of their papers to a special issue of the International Journal on Artificial Intelligence Tools (IJAIT) to be published in 2006. RANLP-05: 21-23 Sep'05, Wed-Fri Post-conference Workshops: 24 Sep'05, Sat Recent Advances in Natural Language Processing (RANLP) is one of the best-established and competitive European NLP conferences. It is held biennially in Bulgaria and grew out from the international summer schools "Contemporary topics in Computational Linguistics" organised for many years in Bulgaria as international training events. The RANLP conferences in 1995, 1997, 2001, and 2003 had invited talks by leading names in NLP and accepted papers of high quality, rigorously reviewed by an international Programme Committee of well-known experts. The conferences also featured tutorials on "hot" NLP topics delivered by leading researchers. RANLP 2005 will be accompanied for the first time by post-conference workshops. Volumes with selected and revised papers from the conference are traditionally published by John Benjamins in the "Current Issues in Linguistic Theories (CILT)" series. RANLP-01 and RANLP-03 were partially supported by the European Commission. RANLP-05 is under negotiation for funding as a Marie Curie large conference. RANLP-05 will feature keynote talks by: Ido Dagan (Bar-Illan University, Israel) Robert Dale (Macquarie University, Australia) Anne de Roeck (Open University, UK) Ralf Grishman (New York University, USA) Submission deadline: End of April/beginning of May 2005 (the conference web site will have updated information) RANLP-05 will be held in the picturesque resort of Borovets. Located in the Rila mountains, it is one of the best known ski and tourist resorts in South-East Europe. Hotel Samokov, the conference venue, offers excellent study and leisure facilities. Borovets is 1 hour by car from Sofia and 2 hours from Plovdiv with international airports in both cities serving as arrival/departure points. This will be held in parallel to Infosystem Forum 2005 (April 19-21, 2005) and the 36th Poznañ Linguistics Meeting (April 22-24, 2005). The increasing importance of human language technologies is a challenge for both the computer science and linguistics communities as these technologies become an ever more essential element of our everyday technological environment. Since Ajdukiewicz, Tarski, Turing and Chomsky (i.e. since the very beginning of the Computer Age) these fields have influenced and stimulated each other. Globalisation, as well as the recent and planned enlargement of the European Union, has created a favourable climate for the intensive exchange of novel ideas, concepts and solutions. The Infosystem Forum plays an integrating role between computer science research, industry and consumers. The Poznañ Linguistics Meetings have a long tradition as a linguistics exchange forum. This year we propose to add an explicitly technological dimension to this meeting and promote the Human Language Technologies face to the industrial Infosystem audience, linking to the results of the very successful Language & Technology Awareness Days (Poznañ, 1995), which served as a kick-off event for new HLT activities in Poland. We therefore invite colleagues from across the world to share with us their experience, recent results and new visions as well as to learn about our achievements. CONFERENCE TOPICS ----------------- We invite the submission of original contributions. The conference topics include but are not limited to: * electronic language resources and tools * formalisation of natural languages * parsing and other forms of NL processing * computer modelling of language competence * NL user modelling * NL understanding by computers * knowledge representation * man-machine NL interfaces * NL application in robotics * text-based information retrieval and extraction, question answering * tools and methodologies for developing multilingual systems * translation enhancement tools * methodological issues in HLT * prototype presentations * intractable language-specific problems in HLT (for languages other than English) * HLT standards * HLT as foreign language teaching support * new challenge: communicative intelligence * vision papers in the field of HLT SPECIAL SESSIONS ---------------- Special sessions are planned: - "In memory of Maurice Gross" - "In memory of Antonio Zampolli" Contributions strictly linked to their activities and/or life are welcome. Contributors are requested to contact the Chair (e-mail: vetulani at amu.edu.pl). It is no longer simply a question of modelling information according to their contents but according to its uses. It is thus necessary to take into account the characteristics related to the problems to solve using the information as well as the characteristics of the users of these systems. The contexts of use widen, from various types of watch (technological, environmental, competing, legal, etc.) to strategic watch and economic intelligence. This is why we are proposing to bring together researchers and industrialists in order to expose their research work in the field of integration of the contexts of use of information and the user characteristics to all the stages of decisional problem resolution using information, as well as in the various phases of information system design. The following topics, but not limited, could be presented: · The user oriented information representation (the representation of information according to potential uses), · The impacts of decisional environments, · The specification of a decisional problem, · User model,  acquisition and exploitation of knowledge on users, · New competences for the exploitation user oriented information system... We consider economic intelligence as a process composed of the following stages: a) Identification if a decisional problem, b) Transformation of the decisional problem to information search problems, c) Identification and validation of information sources, d) Retrieval and validation of information, e) Processing, analysis and presentation of collected information, f) Interpretation of indicators, g) Decision and its application to the identified problem. Each of these stages calls for particular vigilance by employing the adequate mechanisms of protection. The consideration for the adequacy of information to a decisional problem, and by extension the consideration for the user (or decision maker), can intervene from stages (b) to (e). These stages are referred to as the watch process. Our objective is to allow researchers and developers present their work as related to modelling and also their applications to these various stages. More specifically, the application and research work can relate to the consideration of uses and the users as related to the activities of representation of information search problem, the automatic collection of information, the annotation or the reformatting of information, the analysis of information, etc. Taking into account the importance of stage (a), work related to the specification of a decisional problem can be presented for stages (f) and (g). This evaluation campaign aims at creating and applying an evaluation methodology to evaluate parsers for the French language. It also aims at building a low cost validated language resource obtained by combining automatically the annotated data produced with the test corpus. The aim is also to create a community around evaluation of parsers for French. The corpus contains 1 million words, extracted from newspapers articles and official reports, medical documents, emails, questions, speech transcriptions and literature texts. The evaluation measures will be calculated on the corpus type and on several dimensions. In order to make the evaluation possible, a common formalism has been adopted by the participants. They will have to adapt the output of their parsers to conform to this formalism. ******************************************************** More details are available at: - http://www.elda.org/easy - http://www.limsi.fr/Recherche/CORVAL/easy - http://www.technolangue.net (Section Action Technolangue -> Projets) Organising committee: Limsi: - Patrick Paroubek, patrick.paroubek at limsi.fr - Isabelle Robba, isabelle.robba at limsi.fr - Anne Vilnat, anne.vilnat at limsi.fr ELDA: - Louis-Gabriel Pouillot, pouillot at elda.org ******************************************************** ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Message diffus par la liste Langage Naturel Informations, abonnement : http://www.biomath.jussieu.fr/LN/LN-F/ English version : http://www.biomath.jussieu.fr/LN/LN/ Archives : http://listserv.linguistlist.org/archives/ln.html La liste LN est parraine par l'ATALA (Association pour le Traitement Automatique des Langues) Information et adhsion : http://www.atala.org/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- From oqydi at PACBELL.NET Sat Oct 30 22:47:03 2004 From: oqydi at PACBELL.NET (Wyatt) Date: Sat, 30 Oct 2004 16:47:03 -0600 Subject: contract and the money, Message-ID: This notification was sent using automated system. This will be held in parallel to Infosystem Forum 2005 (April 19-21, 2005) and the 36th Pozna? Linguistics Meeting (April 22-24, 2005). The Pozna? Linguistics Meetings have a long tradition as a linguistics exchange forum. This year we propose to add an explicitly technological dimension to this meeting and promote the Human Language Technologies face to the industrial Infosystem audience, linking to the results of the very successful Language & Technology Awareness Days (Pozna?, 1995), which served as a kick-off event for new HLT activities in Poland. The following topics, but not limited, could be presented: ??The user oriented information representation (the representation of information according to potential uses), ??The impacts of decisional environments, ??The specification of a decisional problem, ??User model,? acquisition and exploitation of knowledge on users, ??New competences for the exploitation user oriented information system... We consider economic intelligence as a process composed of the following stages: a)?Identification if a decisional problem, b)?Transformation of the decisional problem to information search problems, c)?Identification and validation of information sources, d)?Retrieval and validation of information, e)?Processing, analysis and presentation of collected information, f)?Interpretation of indicators, g)?Decision and its application to the identified problem. ******************************************************** More details are available at: - http://www.elda.org/easy - http://www.limsi.fr/Recherche/CORVAL/easy - http://www.technolangue.net (Section Action Technolangue -> Projets) Organising committee: Limsi: - Patrick Paroubek, patrick.paroubek at limsi.fr - Isabelle Robba, isabelle.robba at limsi.fr - Anne Vilnat, anne.vilnat at limsi.fr ELDA: - Louis-Gabriel Pouillot, pouillot at elda.org ******************************************************** ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Message diffus? par la liste Langage Naturel Informations, abonnement : http://www.biomath.jussieu.fr/LN/LN-F/ English version : http://www.biomath.jussieu.fr/LN/LN/ Archives : http://listserv.linguistlist.org/archives/ln.html La liste LN est parrain?e par l'ATALA (Association pour le Traitement Automatique des Langues) Information et adh?sion : http://www.atala.org/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- From oqydi at PACBELL.NET Sat Oct 30 22:47:03 2004 From: oqydi at PACBELL.NET (Wyatt) Date: Sat, 30 Oct 2004 16:47:03 -0600 Subject: contract and the money, Message-ID: This notification was sent using automated system.
