Postdoc / PhD / Researcher Positions in Game Technology / Knowledge
Acquisition / Language Technology / Training Simulation / Virtual Reality

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The Department of Computing at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia
is seeking candidates to fill a number of vacant research positions:

 * Postdoctoral researchers.
 * Researchers holding an MSc degree or Diploma in Information
Technology / Electrical Engineering / Computer Science / Cognitive
Science / Lingusitics / Mechanical Engineering / Digital Media or
equivalent.

The applicants can work towards a PhD degree, while occupying
these positions, if desirable.

The researchers profiles and related information can be found at
http://www.ics.mq.edu.au/~richards/hcsg/. The Department houses a
Virtual Reality Lab for experimental studies. The positions are funded
by a competitive Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery
Grant. The general research topic is virtual training environment for
risk assessment and spans the fields of Game Technology / Knowledge
Acquisition / Language Technology / Training Simulation / Virtual
Reality. An indicative list of possible research topics is the
following:

* cognitive modelling, hand motions and sketching behaviour
* computer graphics, realistic representation of avatars in a game
engine or virtual environment
* virtual reality engine development for the behavioural simulation of
intelligent agents
* risk assessment and situated learning in virtual environments
* knowledge representation, acquisition and maintenance
* how to treat paraphrases, where multiple expressions can refer to
the same action, along with a method for automatically acquiring
knowledge of these paraphrases
* how to treat ambiguity, where one expression could potentially refer
to several actions
* how to interface a natural language component with a knowledge base
that can be extended arbitrarily by domain experts.

The exact research topic of the new researchers will possibly combine
a number of these topics and be chosen so as to match his/her
experience aiming at maximum productivity. For example, in the context
of virtual environment training, virtual agents will have to
coordinate action and language. One PhD project may build on work
relating the two: in giving instructions to agents (language
understanding) and in allowing agents to express with appropriate
nuance utterances important to the training (language
generation). This will involve addressing the final three points
above.

The positions are financed by the ARC and appointments are for up to 3
years. Proven research experience in one of the following fields:
virtual reality, game engines, computer graphics, language technology,
knowledge acquisition, risk assessment, cognitive modelling, motion
capture or animations is essential. Very good knowledge of English, C
programming, OpenGL, DirectX, and strong interest in academic research
are highly desired.

Prospective applicants should forward a cover letter addressing the
research experience in their field of expertise, their resume (CV) and
recommendation letters by fax or email (preferably) by May 6th to:
