multiple projects in a wide range of areas? Yahoo! Search is seeking
an outstanding senior software engineer to work in the European
Languages team, part of the International Search Group. The european
languages team focuses on building the best, most relevant, and
providing the best user experience web search service to international
regions where european languages are spoken. This extremely
challenging task requires a good understanding of not only the general
web search technology, but also how languages differ around the world
and how the usage of the web and search engines changes from region to
region. As a senior software engineer in the European Languages team,
your goal will be to build the best search experience for users in
Europe and Latin America. Your projects will involve changes in core
components of the search engine such as crawling, indexing or ranking,
requiring you to work closely with the other engineering groups of
Yahoo Search. Each project will give you new knowledge and insight
about one or more components of the search engine as you design
innovative solutions to challenging problems and implement their
solutions.

Essential Responsibilities

Design and implement new features to improve the relevance of our web
search engine and the user experience for users in regions were
European languages are spoken. Track the root causes of observed
issues, and always be on the lookout for patterns of issues that can
be solved in automated ways. Analyze relevance tests reports, query
logs and other data to identify new opportunities for improvement. You
are expected to be self-motivated and a fast learner.

Required Knowledge

* Strong experience in C/C++ and UNIX development tools. Fluency in
  Perl or Python.
* Strong communication and collaboration skills to work with teams in
  both the US and Europe
* Minimum four years of industrial experience building complex
  software products
* MS or Ph.D. in Computer Science or equivalent.
* Fluency in one or more European languages, in addition to English
* Experience in computational linguistics, statistical modeling,
  machine learning, software internationalization or information 
  retrieval is a plus.
