Résumé :
Gestures, meaningful bodily actions, that speakers use while speaking
provide multifaceted windows into language, cognition and communication.
Most recent research has focused on the use of "iconic" ( e.g.,
depictions of action and motion) gestures and what they reveal about our
thought processes or speaker's (embodied) cognition.  I will provide
experimental , crosslinguistic and cross cultural evidence showing that
such cospeech gestures are in fact less likely to provide a “direct “
window into our thinking process since their production and perception
are modulated by speakers' online linguistic formulation of a message
and the communicative intent (i.e., addressee design, communicative eye
gaze ).  Implications of these findings about gesture production and
perception models will be discussed.
