Dear all,

Does anyone know if there is much difference between Bruce Donaldson's
'Dutch: a Comprehensive Grammar' and his earlier 'A Dutch Reference
Grammar'?

I have a very dog-eared copy of A Dutch Reference Grammar and find it
enormously useful and I was wondering whether it is worth buying his newer
volume. A simple solution would be to look at a copy in a bookshop, of
course, but I live in Spain, have not left the country since I came here in
1994 (my wife is Spanish), and have little prospect of doing so until next
year at the earliest. So if I buy it, I'll be buying it on line without
seeing it.

As this is my first email to the list I suppose it is appropriate to
introduce myself. I am a British national, resident in Spain. I learnt my
Dutch in the 1980's while I was doing a doctorate on 17th century Dutch
history. The doctorate never got finished but I fell in  with the Dutch
language. I read quite a bit of Dutch literature too. Nescio's 'De
Uitvreter' is my favourite book in any language. As for Couperus, Vestdijk,
etc, etc... What a pity that these great writers are so little known.

All this was a while ago and I've not spoken a word of Dutch since 1990.
Learning Spanish completely erased everything I knew, but I am now in the
process of trying to recuperate what I've forgotten. When I started (last
December) I couldn't even remember how to form the tenses, but bit by bit it
is coming back.

This is only my second week on the list so I'm very much a new kid on the
virtual block, but it seems a friendly place.
