From: Bryan E. Schulz [bryans at northnet.net]
Subject: "Literature"

Reading "Travels With A Donkey" by Robert Louis Stevenson written about
1879, I came across a passage of interest. Exact quote except for French
accent marks.

"On the whole, this is a Scottish landscape, although not so noble as the
best in Scotland; and by an odd coincidence, the population is, in its way,
as Scottish as the country. They are abrupt, uncouth, Fifeshire manners
and accost you, as if you were trespassing, with an 'Ou'st-ce que vous
allez?' only translatable into the Lowland
'Whau'r ye gaun?' They keep the Scottish Sabbath."

Note the reference to Lowland. The same as we discuss?

Bryan,

Yes, the very same!

Stevenson also wrote in Lowland Scots. You can read his Scots writings at my
website, which has two short stories of his with a lot of Scots in them, and
all (as far as I know) of his Scots poetry.

Incidentally, the website is currently undergoing a revamp - it'll soon have
a completely new look to it and even more reading matter, including two
novels in Scots!
