Subject: "Lyrics"

John Tait sgriobh:

>The version in my (old battered 2nd hand) edition of Burns corresponds with
>the version provided by Colin rather than with this one. Anything in this
>edition about using different sources?

My copy (from _Burns Poems and Songs_, Jas. Kinsley, ed. Oxford:
1969, which his intro says is ca. 80% from Burns's own holograph mss
and virtually all the balance from contemp. sources Burns would have
vetted) gives:

Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne!

(chorus:)
For auld lang syne, my jo,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup[1] o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne.

And surely ye'll be your pint stowp!
And surely I'll be mine!
And we'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
For auld, &c.

We twa hae run about the braes,
And pou'd the gowans fine;
But we've wander'd mony a weary fitt,
Sin auld lang syne.
For auld, &c.

We twa hae paidl'd in the burn,
Frae morning sun til dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar'd,
Sin auld lang syne.
For auld, &c.

And there's a hand, my trusty fiere!
And gie's a hand o' thine!
And we'll tak a right gude-willie-waught,
For auld lang syne.
For auld, &c.

1. Burns's own footnote: Some sing, Kiss, in place of Cup.
