Subject: Folk Beliefs

Hi, all!

I was glad to read that the beliefs surrounding lightning are not
restricted to darkest Africa.
It is a native belief that lightning is the water snake reaching through
the sky and seeking someone to devour.

My grandmother also covered all mirrors (also those on wardrobes) during
thunder storms and we were forbidden to stand near windows. She also
demanded quietness in the 'presence of God's power'. Incidences of
lightning striking indoors are numerous.

I think the Guinness Book of Records sites the incidence in Zimbabwe
where 12 people were killed in a hut after one lightning strike. It
certainly makes sense to treat the phenomenon with respect.

cheers!

Elsie Zinsser
