Actually, Peter Trudgill, the English dialectologist, records the barred u
as the sound of the "oo" in Edinburgh Scots "The'r a moose loose aboot the
hoose" &c. Comparing it with what I know of Swedish pronunciation, I think
this is about right (tho my Swedish tutor was Finnish and seemed to me to
have no idea of non-Finnish pronunciations of Swedish :)
