Subject: LL-L: "Ethnonyms" LOWLANDS-L, 21.OCT.1999 (06) [E]

This explanation on the Roma people was most fascinating. What is the
earliest date given for the existence of Roma people? What is their ethnic
background? Why do they call themselves 'Roma' ? Does this word have anything
at all to do with the verb 'to roam'?
And please tell us, what language do these people speak in Spain ? Do the
true'Andalusians' 'who do speak 'Kalé'. understand them? I speak Spanish
fluently but could not understand all the Andalusians... Many of these
Andalusians are 'Gypsies' or am I completely wrong ?

Subject: Ethnonyms

Dear Lila,

There are various theories regarding the ethnonym _Rroma_, and I alluded to
one in my earlier posting:

> As far as I know, Rom people refer to each other as _Rrom_ (< Sanskrit
> _rama_, Romani _rr_ usually being pronounced like a "French" /r/ or
> Portuguese _rr_])

We cannot go into further details on this Lowlands-devoted list.

'To roam' comes from Middle English _romen_, and that's all I can find out.
Thus, strange though it may seem, a connection with _Rrom_ may not be totally
out of the question.

However, going into further details and dealing with the language of Iberian
Roma would take us far off-topic as far as Lowlands-L is concerned. If you
are interested in further details I strongly recommend reading publications by
Ian Hancock and exploring the websites I had listed earlier:
