Subject: Etymology

Roger quoted:

>>De Bruyne, Soldatentaal 1914-1918, Aartrijke, 1994, gives

Moukère (in Paris slang):
    1. girl, woman
    2. hore

Mec (originally refering to soldiers from N. Africa)
"misprijzende term voor een medesoldaat, schavuit... waarschijnlijk afgeleid
van het bedevaartsoord Mekka".
I still hear "Mec" frequently for "friend" in nowadays French slang, with no
reference to North-Africa.<<

My Hachette dictionary doesn't give a derivation for "mec" (for which it
gives two meanings approximating "Mensch" and "chap") but says "moukère" is
from Sp. "mujer".

There is, of course, another word "mac", which means a pimp, ponce or
procurer, short for "maquereau", from Middle Dutch "makelare", Modern Dutch
"makelaar", "dealer".
