Subject: Etymology

Roger asked:

>Could it be due to (low?) Germanic influence that the "di" in the names of
the days in French, lundi, mardi... etc. became a suffix, where the latin
"dies" originally preceded the name,...<

According to my Hachette dictionary "lundi" ( for example) comes from Vulgar
Latin "lunis dies", Classical Latin "lunae dies". Perhaps Roger is thinking
of "dies irae" and other formulations. It seems reasonable that where one is
distinguishing one day of a week from another the distinguishing bit should
come first for emphasis.
