Subject: Songs

Ron

Thomas Hardy wrote a short story about a village choir in the West of
England in the early 19th century. "Choir" here means the band which
played in churches without an organ. They would write out the sacred tunes
in the front of their manuscript book and profane ones (some with bawdy
lyrics) at the back. At an Open University summer school a
fellow-student got very confused by this and would not be shaken from the
belief that the bawdy songs were also sung in church!

"Green Grow the Rashes" suggests the very open treatment of an aspect of
sexual promiscuity which is rarely mentioned so publicly!
