From: Roger P. G. Thijs [roger.thijs at village.uunet.be]
Subject: Limburgish

In "Veldeke", since 75 year magazine of "Veldeke", an association promoting
literary activity in the Limburgish language, vol 74, issue 5 (September,
October 1999), the results of a "marketing" review of Veldeke:
- Veldeke has 3400 members
- the average age of the members is 50 years.

Unfortunately the public interested to preserve the local language is aging
about everywhere. Parents think they need to rise their kids in the standard
language of the country, rather than in the municipal language or variety. I
guess this process is irreversible.

For bringing some Limburgish flavor in this list, let us quote from the very
same issue, page 117, some expressions about laughing (by Albaer Sluijs).
It's in the variety of Sittard, variety well familiar to everyone in
Limburg, thanks to the songs of Jo Erens.

Dar 't lèste lach - lach 't bèste
In de lach sjeite
Veur jedere sjeet lache
Lache wie eine boer dae tandjpien haet
Dao krieg ich de sjlappe lach van
In zien vuuske lache
Det is neit óm te lache
Hae lach deks in zichzelf
Sjöddele van 't lache
De sjlappe lach kriege
Dat kèndj is lachkrank
Eine aansjtaeke mit lache
Lache is drie maol gezónjer es millesien

Comments,
"Hae lach deks in zichzelf" In my variety we don't know "zichzelf" and we
would say "Hi-e laach dek in zen eige"

Regards,
Roger
