From: Roger Thijs [roger.thijs at village.uunet.be]
Subject: Language politics

I received the bimonthly "Veldeke, Jaargang 75, 2000 nummer 4" today.

Except for the classical literary contributions, it contains two political
articles in Dutch:

1. Bob Belemans reacts heavily against the political party (present in the
"Provinciale staten van (Nederlands) Limburg) the PNL, Partij Nieuw
Limburg, who wants to create and promote a Limburgish koiné "Algemeen
Beschaafd Limburgs".

Bob is actively participating at Leuven University at the "Dictionary of
Limburgish dialects", for just recording the diversity, rather than
promoting a Limburgish Esperanto. Veldeke traditionally opposes against all
attempts to create in a not-natural Limburgish koiné. Each contributor
traditionally signs with name + parish/ municipality.

2. An interview by Paul Weelen with the new "Gouverneur van de Provincie
(Nederlands) Limburg, Mr. BJM baron van Voorst tot Voorst". Other Provinces
have a "Commissaris van de koningin", Limburg traditionally has, similar to
the Belgian provinces, a "gouverneur".
He doesn't speak Limburgish, and also does not support a koiné, quote: "...

In an other contribution, this time in Limburgish from Stokkem in Belgian
Limburg, Rob Belemants lists the actions by the government of Belgian
Limburg for the next year: "Ich kal ouch Limburgs' in Bels-Limburg"
The plan includes distribution of beer mats with expressions in Limburgish
with a cartoon to pubs in Belgian Limburg. So Limburgish is at least
supported and defended at the place where it is still spoken.
Sample beer mat texts:
Dzje kunt miech an mennen tram kéumen hange.
Zich dröck make uuëver ungelagde eier.
Dae haet lètters geïeéte.
Da hèt droad gekos.

For literary Belgian Limburg the magazine has 3 poems by Theo van Dael in
the Kinder variant (Kinder: Kinrooi, Belgium)

A "streektaalfunctionaris" will be recruted for the "Limburghoes". Needs to
have a university degree with specialization in dialectology, and be fluent
in Dutch, Limburgish and German. Info: Drs. L.J.A. Giesen, Groetweg 24,
5926 PT Venlo, tel. 077-323-0961.

Roger
