From: Andrew Eagle [K27 at compuserve.com]
Subject: Phonology [S/E]

I'm looking into some pronunciations of words in some varieties of NE
Scots.

Central Scots /o/ to North East Scots /@i/

Coat [kw at it]
coal [kw at il]
cole [kw at il] (a haystack)
gote [g at it] (a ditch, drain, narrow sea inlet)

Central Scots /e/ to NE /@i/

wade [w at id]
wait [w at it]
wale [w at il] (choose)
wame [w at im] (belly)

claes [kl at iz] (clothes)
gaup /gawp /gape [g at ip]
plate [pl at it]

Central Scots /e/ or /i/ to NE /@i/

elieven [@l at ivn] (eleven)
sieven [s at ivn] (seven)
even[@ivn]

lea [l at i] (fallow land)
squeal [skw at il]
treacle [tr at ikl]
weak [w at ik]
weave [w at iv]
wheat [M at it]

heeze [h at iz] (lift)

These don't include words where English /oi/ to Scots /@i/ e.g. boil - byle
etc.

I'm trying to find if there's a pattern behind this but need more words for
statistical purposes.

Does anybody know of similar words and words where one would expect the
/@i/ pronunciation in NE but it doesn't occur.

Anybody have suggestions as to what causes this pronunciation shift?

Andy
