From: Roger P. G. Thijs [roger.thijs at village.uunet.be]
Subject: West Limburgish from Diepenbeek

It was announced in December, I got my copy today:
The dictionnary of West-Limburgish from Diepenbeek is in the shops:

Heemkundige Kring Diepenbeek,
Diepenbeeks, Eigenwoordig en Eigenzinnig,
2000, ISBN 90-805412-1-4, 437 pp.

Some language samples:

p. 405 Lullaby:

Zeëge, zeëge menneke
bòtter in ze kenneke
't menneke kos 't kenneke ni draoge
zèit 't obbe waogel
de waogel kos ni voere
zèit 't inne geboere
de geboere wórre ni toas
zèit 't in 't bakhoas
't bakhoas wór touw
zèit 't op 'n zwatte kouw
de zwatte kouw dreide drèè kier rond
en 't menneke voel obbe grond.

p. 404 Count-off song:

Bim bom belleke
de kùster trikt an 't sjelleke
weëmen is dooë noa wir doed?
Een aad verslete menneke
boe gòn ze da begraove?
Inne Kempe inne zoavel
bè z'n aa dükke moul
in 'n diepe, diepe koul.

In the list of municipalities and sites, one finds a typical consonnant
shift illustrated:
j + vowel for Dutch: vowel + r/l

Diepenbeeks Dutch

Bjallénge: Berlingen
Jaan Hern
Mjallemans Merlemont
Joder'n Herderen
Mjats'nhove Meershoven
Jott'n Herten
Sjakove Schalkhoven

Also in some cases the name of the sites got a different origin:

Diepenbeeks Dutch

Kotsove Kortessem
(Kurt zijn hof versus Kurt zijn heem)

Some expressions Diepenbeeks/Dutch:

Vrolliehaan en pjadstaan moge noet ni stil stön
Vrouwenhanden en paardentanden mogen nooit stil zijn.

As oos kat 'n kouw wór, mèllekde veë ze onnere stoof.
Je neemt je wensen voor werkelijkheid.
(Als onze kat een koe was, dan melkten wij ze onder de kachel)

Regards,
Roger
