Subject: Transation help? (OT)

This is off-topic for the list, but ours is probably still the very
best list to ask, so I hope Ron will excuse me! I was prompted to
ask because of Roger Thijs's mention of having studied Mediaeval
French.

I have a copy of a 13th/14th c. cloak-pin. It has an inscription or
motto on each side. The church-Latin inscription on one side is
very obvious [IHESVS NAZARENVS REX IVDEORVM] , but the other, in
Mediaeval French, defeats me:

AMI AMET DELI PENCET

It has something to do with loving and thinking, but that's about as
far as I can get. The 'translation' given by the museum-store
catalog from which I bought it was 'think of a friend who loves
you', but I don't believe that can be right.

There are also stylised hearts included, but their spacing is so
contrivedly regular that I think they must all be decorative rather
than one or more meant to read as rebus:

AMI [heart] AME [heart]TXD [heart] ELI [heart] PEN [heart] CET
[heart]

So now would all the M.F. scholars please come out of the woodwork
and provide a definitive translation? :-) Thanks very much!

Margaret
