Subject: Afrikaans - word origins

Afrikaans - word origins:
PETOOR OUPA

>Vriende,
> Ek het al dikwels die benaming PETOOR OUPA teengekom.
>Die besondere betekenis daarvan is ek nie seker van, is daar
> miskien van U wat my kan help.
>Ek vermoed dit is 'n Nederlandse woord.
>       Dankie,
>       Abraham Kruger

This question came my way via the SA Rootsweb genealogy mailling list.
My answer to Abraham was that it may have come from the word
'betovergrootvader' as we use it in Netherlandic. ie the father of
one's great grandfather.

Bet=pet
 over=oor
 grootvader=oupa.

Gives us Petoor Oupa

Would I be correct in this assumption? Has anybody ever heard of this
word before? I couldn't find it in my dictionary

Regards

Gerda
