Dear Lowlanders,

Those of you, particularly those in the Americas, who are interested in
genealogical research may be pleased to know that the important emigrants'
archives of the City of Hamborg/Hamburg are now becoming easily accessible via
the Internet.  Our own Clara Kramer-Freudenthal found a relevant newspaper
article and forwarded it to me.

Hamborg/Hamburg, my native place in Northern Germany, is considered one of the
three major ports from which European emigrants left for the Americas and
other overseas immigration countries before the age of mass air transport.
The other two are Liverpool in England and Bremerhaven (Port of Bremen) in
Northern Germany.  Hamburg joined in relatively late and grew into a major
emigrants' destination by the turn of the 19th to the 20th century.
Emigration services became a major industry for the city which built a regular
emigrants' district on the Veddel.  Specifically, Hamburg was the last
European stop for emigrants from all over Central and Eastern Europe,
including more than one millions Jews, many of whom were escaping the pogroms
in Russia, Belorus and Ukraine.  Not every would-be emigrant actually made it
to the land of his or her dreams, and of those that did not make it many
remained in Hamburg and contributed to the city's ethnic diversity.

Until recently, descendants of emigrants were able to access the Hamburg
archives indirectly, mostly via a special service provided at the Museum für
Hamburgische Geschichte (?), and it was not cheap to have other people do the
research for you.  The city is now employing handicapped people to enter all
available data so that they can be accessed directly from anywhere via the
Internet.

The project is only in its infancy.  So far only emigration data for the years
1890 to 1893 are available.

There are various informative pages with descriptions of the project,
including a video presentation in either German or English according to
choice.  If you click on the button labeled "Search Now!" you will get into
the actual archive.  I did a few trial runs and was pleasantly surprised about
the amount of detail available for each emigrant.  (Click on "Details" next to
any given person listed.)

Reportedly, the site is very well visited and occasionally experiences
overload despite the use of a high-capacity server.  So be patient please.
