The spelling 'gate' was also widespread in middle Scots (along with gat and

gait)

I tend to use an English/Scots dictionary as a thesaurus. That way I avoid
using the same word or words all the time. Of course its important to make
sure any suggested words aren't being used out of context or with the wrong

grammar.
