1. kot

"Kot" is the traditional name in Belgian Dutch for a student room one
generally rents for 10 months (October-July) in somebody's house downtown.
The word also penetrated in Belgian French. While the plural in Dutch is
"koten", it is "kots" in French. In (Belgian) French one has also the verb
"koter"

Quoting from the Belgian newspaper "Le Soir", "Apprendre à choisir son
deuxième "chez soi"", 4 septembre 2000:

On ne _kote_ pas n'importe comment.
Tous les _kots_ ne sont pas encore loués..
... le marché du _kot_ est professionalisé...
Namur... étudiants ... dont 2500 logent en _kot_...

2. karakol

I found an etymological explication for the Flemish/Brabantish word
_karakol_ for snail (Dutch: slak) in an interesting book I bought for 1 USD

20 ct on the Antwerp flee market:
Die Schnecke in Sprache und Volkstum der Romanen, Inaugural-Dissertation
zur Erlangung der Doktorwürde einer Hohen Philosophischen Fakultät der
Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen vorgelegt von Walter Hörz aus
Neresheim, 1938, Spezialbetrieb für Dissertationsdruck von Robert Noske in
Borna-Leipzig.

some highlights
.. Der erste Beleg von _escargot_ findet sich im 14. Jahrhundert, wo das
Wort als _escargole_ erscheint. Im Provenzalischen haben wir nun heute für
die behauste Schnecke Formen wie _carcol_ m., _caragol_ m, _cacaláuso_ f.
u. ä. Das Katalanische hat _caragol_ m., das Spanische und Portugiesiche
_caracol_ m. Es läßt sich wohl mit Sicherheit sagen daß diese Formen
gleichen Stammes sind wie _escargot_...

... daß gleichartige Formen im Norden des Französischen Sprachgebiets, in
__Flandern__ und der Wallonie (_caracol_) sowie im Süden des
Provenzalischen (_carcol_,_carcóu_) und auf der Iberischen Halbinsel
(_caragol_, _caracol_) auftreten....

... Südfrankreich..; so  finden wir neben _caracol_ zahlreiche andere
Formen  wie _cacaláu_, _cacaláus_ m, _cacaláuso_ f. (Provence), _cacaráu_,
cagaráu_ m., _cacaráulo_,  _cagaráulo_ (Languedoc),  _cagaról_, _cagarót_
m. (Ariège)...
... das anlautende _caca-_, _caga-_ das einen Einfluß von _cacare_, prov.
_cagá_ vermuten läßt. So bedeutet z.B. _cagarót_ m. in den Alpen "crotte de

chèvre", während im Dép Ariège dasselbe Wort die behauste Schnecke
bezeichnet.

.. sachliche Erklärung... wir brauchen nur zu denken an den schmierigen,
unappetitlichen Schleim, den das Tier hinter sich läßt... wohl entstanden
als ein Spotwort, das die Kinder die Schnecke zuriefen..

We actually use in Antwerp:
- "caracol" for the white snails, served in a cup in 'their soup", along
the streets
- "escargot" for the black snails, served with garlic butter in
restaurants.

3. Bitsingen

In the municipal council of Riemst (in Belgian Limburg, adjacent to the
language border) there was a row since in the new tourist brochur of the
munipality, the adjacent walloon municipality of Bassenge is indicated as
Bassenge, rather than with it's Dutch name "Bitsingen".

I'm afraid there is a tendency to replace the Dutch names for wallon
municipalities by the official French names.
