I had second thoughts after deleting one of Ron's messages about "kot" and
perhaps I remember incorrectly what he said. I just wanted to make clear
that in BE the primary meaning of "cot" is a bed, usually with high sides,
for a baby. In AmE the word is used for what we call, I would say
exclusively, a "camp bed".

What do US babies sleep in (apart from "pajamas")?

Subject: Etymology

Dear Lowlanders,

I have this vague hunch that this word _cot_ 'small dwelling/homestead',
'cottage' and its relatives in various languages (perhaps also the words _hut_
and _house_ and their relatives?) are related to Indo-Aryan *_kota_ 'built
shelter' > 'settlement', 'fort', 'town' (also in place names such as Bengali
_Kali-Kota_ "City of (the goddess) Kali" = 'Calcutta') which apparently was
imported into Malayo-Polynesian varieties (e.g., Malay/Indonesian _kota_
'fort', 'city' in numerous place names, e.g., _Kota Singapura_, _Kota
Kinabalu_, _Kota Udang_ (= _Cirebon_), _Kota Wanci_) and Altaic place names
(e.g., Classical Mongolian _Kökekota_ > Modern Mongolian _Huh(e)hot_ "Blue
City"). So I assume that there is an Indo-European root.

This may be one of those few words that is found in Uralic, Altaic and
Indo-European, either as some "proto-proto" shared item or as an ancient
loanword; e.g. Proto-Finno-Ugric *_kota_ 'hut' from which Hungarian _ház_
'house', Finnish _koti_ 'house', 'home' ~ _koto_ 'home' are supposed to be
derived.

Can any of you Indo-Europeanists debunk or elucidate?

Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
